Sporty + Arroyo + The Shift.

Ewe Ewe Sporty is back in stock! This sport weight superwash merino has been popular lately, especially for Heather Walpole’s free “Temperature Tee,” so we’re pleased to have refreshed our supply.

Ewe Ewe Sporty:

  • sport weight
  • solid colors
  • 100% superwash merino
  • 145 yards/50 grams
  • $10 each

Sporty is a good fit for Andrea Mowry’s “The Shift,” a cousin of her popular “Nightshift” shawl. “The Shift” is smaller in gauge and in scale, and while it looks like a triangular shawl wrapped around the neck, it’s actually a cowl, which many find easier to wear. You’ll need 200 yards each in three colors, and while there are plenty of tempting combinations in Sporty, I couldn’t resist adding some Malabrigo Arroyo to the mix. These two yarns match in terms of gauge and fiber content, and they bring out the best in one another – here are a few color combinations for “The Shift” cowl!

Malabrigo Arroyo:

  • sport weight
  • hand-dyed, speckled and variegated colorways
  • 100% superwash merino
  • 335 yards/100 g
  • $18.60 each

Order online if one of these colorways sparks your curiosity, or if you’d like to see a special combination just for you! We’re happy to help you plan your next project, and can ship your order or hold it here at the shop for local pickup. Thanks for all your support through our temporary closure!

Back in stock: Kelbourne Woolens Scout.

Mills around the world have been closed or working at lower capacity due to COVID-19, causing delays in shipping and short supply on some of our favorite yarns. Kelbourne Woolens Scout is one such yarn, but after months of waiting, we are delighted to have it back in stock!

Kelbourne Woolens Scout

  • DK weight
  • 2ply, worsted spun
  • 100% wool
  • 274 yards/100 grams
  • $18 each

Marie Greene’s new “Soundtrack” is a circular yoke pullover, knit from the top-down in 2 shades of Scout. It was the subject of a recent Knit-Along, so hundreds of knitters have already made it, though it’s very recently published – this means you can see lots of great color combinations on Ravelry! Sale Spotlight: Kauni Effektgarn.

Everything in our shop is 15% off during July, our Annual Inventory Sale! All month, I’ll be shining a spotlight on the yarns we have in stock – today, let’s look at Kauni Effektgarn!

Kauni Effektgarn:

  • sport weight
  • 2 ply, self-striping
  • 100% wool
  • 440 yards/100 grams – sold in 140, 150, and 160 gram balls
  • prices vary by weight – $29 – $36 each

Kauni is unique even among its fellow self-striping yarns at the shop for its long stretches of color. It can be difficult to visualize exactly how the colors are going to play out in a gradually self-striping yarn like Kauni – this octopus-like book of swatches helps, showing what each colorway looks like when it’s knit up.

This kind of yarn lends itself to patterns shaped with short rows, like “Wingspan,” “Dreambird,” and “Bermuda Scarf,” where the changing color highlights the construction of the piece.

Sale Spotlight: Brooklyn Tweed Vale.

Everything in our shop is 15% off during July, our Annual Inventory Sale! All month, I’ll be shining a spotlight on the yarns we have in stock – today, let’s look at Brooklyn Tweed Vale!

Brooklyn Tweed Vale:

  • lace weight
  • 2 ply, worsted-spun
  • 100% Rambouillet wool
  • 450 yards/50 grams
  • $15 each

Like all Brooklyn Tweed yarns, Vale is entirely sourced, spun, and dyed in the US, reflecting the company’s steadfast allegiance to domestic textiles. The fiber is worsted-spun for a smooth yarn with sharp stitch definition, then skein-dyed at the Saco River Dyehouse in Maine. Vale is also spectacularly bouncy in the skein and in the hand, full of elasticity – one of my favorite yarn qualities.

Sale Spotlight: Noro Silk Garden Lite.

Everything in our shop is 15% off during July, our Annual Inventory Sale! All month, I’ll be shining a spotlight on the yarns we have in stock – today, let’s look at Noro Silk Garden Lite!

Noro Silk Garden Lite:

  • DK weight
  • single ply, self-striping
  • 45% mohair, 45% silk, 10% wool
  • 136 yards/50 grams
  • $12 each

Silk Garden Lite is a DK weight yarn that slowly changes from one color to the next several yards at a time, so that whatever you’re knitting or crocheting with it comes out striped. This bias-knit “Argosy” scarf that hangs in our shop shows this well.

Scrolling through Ravelry, I saw that over 300 knitters had used Silk Garden Lite for Jared Flood’s “Noro Striped Scarf,” though the now-classic pattern calls for a heavier yarn.

For “Noro Striped Scarf,” pick two different colors of Silk Garden Lite, two balls each. Not only do the yarns make stripes, but the scarf itself is striped, for a simple knit with big visual impact.

Dream in Color Sock-It Club: July.

The Dream in Color Sock-It Club is back! This time around, each limited edition skein of Smooshy comes with a 100-yard mini skein for coordinating heels and toes. July’s colorway conjures sand, sea, and colorful beach umbrellas!

Smooshy is a tightly-plied fingering weight yarn that’s ideal for sock knitting, composed of 85% superwash merino and 15% nylon for strength.

There are so many wonderful sock patterns out there, but sometimes something simple is best, especially with such a highly variegated colorway – Madeline Gannon’s “Afterthought Heel Socks” are just the ticket.

We still have a handful of last year’s Sock-It Club skein sets on hand, all at $36 each – order online during July to snag your favorites at 15% off!

Just a reminder – all sales are final during our Annual Inventory Sale, no returns or exchanges. Thanks!

Sale Spotlight: Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering.

Everything in our shop is 15% off during July, our Annual Inventory Sale! All month, I’ll be shining a spotlight on the yarns we have in stock – today, let’s look at Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering!

Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering:

  • fingering weight
  • 3 ply, worsted-spun, smooth
  • 100% superwash merino wool
  • 145 yards/50 grams
  • $10 each

Like all Ewe Ewe yarns, Fluffy Fingering is tightly plied for excellent stitch definition, and comes in a range of solid colors from neutral to pastel to bright. Its machine-washability makes it suitable for socks, baby things, and frequently-worn accessories, but it’s just as happy in a shawl, perhaps paired with a hand-dyed yarn for contrast.

Sale Spotlight: Isager Alpaca 3.

Everything in our shop is 15% off during July, our Annual Inventory Sale! All month, I’ll be shining a spotlight on the yarns we have in stock – today, let’s look at Isager Alpaca 3!

Isager Alpaca 3:

  • bulky weight
  • chainette construction
  • 50% alpaca, 50% wool
  • 137 yards/50 grams
  • $10 each

This yarn has tremendous elasticity, making it a pleasure to work with and surely a pleasure to wear. The label doesn’t have any recommendation for needle size or gauge, so Anne got out a pair of US 10 needles and started swatching. She did a little garter stitch, a little stockinette, a few other texture patterns, and still wanted to keep knitting – a good sign! After blocking, the gauge in stockinette measures about 4 stitches per inch, though a range of 3.5 – 4.5 stitches per inch is also appropriate for this yarn.

What to knit with Isager Alpaca 3? Here are some ideas!

BC Garn Loch Lomond:

  • 2 ply tweed
  • 100% wool
  • 170 yards/50 grams

Koigu Collector’s Club: Barn Art.

The Koigu Collector’s Club continues! Each month, we’ll receive 21 skeins of KPPPM in a limited edition color dyed especially for a select group of local yarn stores that carry Koigu.

Our most recent shipment from Koigu is Barn Art, a playful variegated colorway. These special skeins are predominantly pale gray, beige, and ivory, streaked and spotted with whimsical brights. Pops of purple, aqua, pink, yellow, blue, and green make for lively skeins up close, though from a distance they read as almost neutral.

Unpacking them, my mind went right back to the design work of Tamy Gore, whose Ravelry page radiates multicolored shawl inspiration. “Ashbrook” caught my eye and captured my imagination, so I’ve created color combinations with that particular pattern in mind.

Here, Koigu KPPPM is paired with Marion Foale 3 ply Wool, a smooth superwash wool that comes in sophisticated solid colors. For “Ashbrook,” you’ll need 2 of each, and that gives you enough yardage to assign the colors any way you like – Gore uses slightly more of color 2 than colors 1 or 3, so put your favorite in that C2 spot!

KPPPM is $15.50 per skein, and Marion Foale 3 ply Wool is $9. Get in touch if you’d like to place an order – we can ship these pretty skeins directly to you or hold your purchase here for pickup while our storefront is temporarily closed!
