Koigu Collector’s Club: Barn Art.

The Koigu Collector’s Club continues! Each month, we’ll receive 21 skeins of KPPPM in a limited edition color dyed especially for a select group of local yarn stores that carry Koigu.

Our most recent shipment from Koigu is Barn Art, a playful variegated colorway. These special skeins are predominantly pale gray, beige, and ivory, streaked and spotted with whimsical brights. Pops of purple, aqua, pink, yellow, blue, and green make for lively skeins up close, though from a distance they read as almost neutral.

Unpacking them, my mind went right back to the design work of Tamy Gore, whose Ravelry page radiates multicolored shawl inspiration. “Ashbrook” caught my eye and captured my imagination, so I’ve created color combinations with that particular pattern in mind.

Here, Koigu KPPPM is paired with Marion Foale 3 ply Wool, a smooth superwash wool that comes in sophisticated solid colors. For “Ashbrook,” you’ll need 2 of each, and that gives you enough yardage to assign the colors any way you like – Gore uses slightly more of color 2 than colors 1 or 3, so put your favorite in that C2 spot!

KPPPM is $15.50 per skein, and Marion Foale 3 ply Wool is $9. Get in touch if you’d like to place an order – we can ship these pretty skeins directly to you or hold your purchase here for pickup while our storefront is temporarily closed!

Rios + Nightshift!

Malabrigo Rios is back in stock! We received this colorful bundle today after a long delay and couldn’t be happier to see it.

Malabrigo Rios is a hand-dyed, worsted weight, superwash merino wool, and it’s one of the most popular yarns at our shop. Each 100 g skein has 210 yards and costs $15.40, and its versatility means we’ve seen it used for sweaters, hats, shawls, socks, capes, blankets, cowls, scarves, mittens, and more. Recently, Andrea Mowry’s “Nightshift” has been a popular use for Rios, so I thought I’d make up some “Nightshift” colorways!

I named these five combinations with the concept of “shifting” in mind, thinking of the way the colors change as they interact with one another, but also thinking more abstractly about change itself.

Order online if one of these colorways sparks your curiosity, or if you’d like to see a special combination just for you! We’re happy to help you plan your next project, and can ship your order or hold it here at the shop for local pickup. Thanks for all your support through our temporary closure!

Sale of the Week: BC Garn Bio Balance!

We’ve decided to keep our doors closed through the month June, though we’re still virtually open for online orders. As we have done throughout April and May, we’ll have a special sale each week – 15% off a featured yarn, our Sale of the Week!

Our next Sale of the Week is 15% off BC Garn Bio Balance, from June 8 – 13!

Bio Balance is a GOTS certified organic yarn from Danish company BC Garn. It’s a sport weight blend of 55% wool and 45% cotton, a combination that brings the best of both fibers to the yarn. The wool lends elasticity and loftiness to the cool, soft cotton, and the result is a nice balance of animal and plant fibers, and smooth, well-behaved fabric.

This makes Bio Balance an especially good fit for our warm climate here in North Carolina. Here are some patterns to consider:

Usually, Bio Balance is $10 per skein; at 15% off, it’s $8.50 each. Head to our online order form if you’d like to place an order – it’ll be on sale through June 13. Thanks for all your support!

Koigu Collector’s Club: New Day.

The Koigu Collector’s Club continues! Each month, we’ll receive 21 skeins of KPPPM in a limited edition color dyed especially for a select group of local yarn stores that carry Koigu.

Our most recent shipment from Koigu is New Day, a rich variegated colorway. These special skeins are streaked with orange, rust, brown, and gray, with highlights of plum and hints of pale blue. Unpacking it, I was reminded once again of Kelbourne Woolens Perennial, a line of fingering weight solids that plays well with hand-dyed yarns like Koigu.

Tamy Gore’s “The Drifter” is a perfect way to showcase these yarns, a garter and slip-stitch shawl which calls for about 414 yards each in two colors. That means 3 skeins of Koigu KPPPM, at 175 yards each, and 1 skein of Kelbourne Woolens Perennial, at 497 yards each.

Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering was also designed as a playmate for multicolored yarns, and has its own unique color palette – here are a few that complement New Day!

KPPPM is $15.50 per skein, Perennial is $26, and Fluffy Fingering is $10. Get in touch if you’d like to place an order – we can ship these pretty skeins directly to you or hold your purchase here for pickup while our storefront is temporarily closed!

Back in stock: Tukuwool Fingering.

We recently restocked Tukuwool Fingering, a Finnish yarn that has become a favorite around here in the few short years we’ve carried it.

Tukuwool Fingering is a woolen-spun, fingering weight blend of Finnsheep and Finnsheep-Texel wool, sourced and produced entirely in Finland. It’s a little toothy, but soft enough for next-to-skin wear, depending upon one’s preferences; a springy and resilient yarn.

I knit two “Bousta Beanies” with this yarn and fell in love with it along the way. Unpacking this recent order of Tukuwool, I contemplated trios of color with the “Bousta Beanie” in mind; here are a few I came up with.

Order Tukuwool Fingering online from the Hillsborough Yarn Shop – we’re happy to help put together a special colorway just for you!

Sale of the Week: Kate Davies Àrd-Thìr!

Though we’re keeping our doors closed during May, we’re still virtually open for mail orders, and we want to offer something fun during this uncertain time. Throughout May, we’ll have a special sale each week – 15% off a featured yarn, our Sale of the Week!

Our next Sale of the Week is 15% off Kate Davies Àrd-Thìr, from May 15 – 21!

Kate Davies Àrd-Thìr is an aran weight blend of Peruvian fibers, 60% highland wool and 40% alpaca. Each 50 gram skein has 71 yards, and it knits up at about 15-19 stitches over 4″ on needles from US 7-10.5. The texture is smooth and round, for sharp stitch definition and a springy elasticity in the hand.

Àrd-Thìr comes in 10 heathered shades inspired by the winter landscape of the Scottish highlands, a beautiful muted palette.

What to knit with Àrd-Thìr? Last year, I made Kate Davies’ “Weel Riggit Hat” with this yarn, which was great fun.

Since then, Davies has written a few more patterns for Àrd-Thìr – “Footfall,” “Corryvreckan,” “Skep,” and “Upstream,” for a start – and Melanie Berg published a lace shawl, “Catch my Fall.” Check out Warm Hands for a few more ideas – we still have copies of the book in stock, too!

Usually, Àrd-Thìr is $12 per skein; at 15% off, it’s $10.20 each. Head to our online order form if you’d like to place an order – it’ll be on sale through May 21. Thanks for all your support!

Sale of the Week: Kelbourne Woolens Germantown!

Though we’re keeping our doors closed during May, we’re still virtually open for mail orders, and we want to offer something fun during this uncertain time. Throughout May, we’ll have a special sale each week – 15% off a featured yarn, our Sale of the Week!

Our next Sale of the Week is 15% off Kelbourne Woolens Germantown, from May 8 – 14!

Germantown is a yarn with a story to tell, a recreation of a classic wool that had been produced in Germantown, Pennsylvania, under a few different brand names since the mid-to-late 19th century. In this current form, Germantown is a worsted spun yarn with a smooth texture, soft hand, and nice elasticity, composed of 100% North American wool.

The Kelbourne Woolens team see this yarn as a classic basic wool for beginners as well as more advanced stitchers – easy to work with, with good stitch definition, but at a reasonable price for a domestically-produced yarn of this quality. At full price, it’s $14 per skein, and at 15% off, it’s $11.90 per skein.

Each skein is 220 yards, enough for a hat, and the folks at Kelbourne Woolens have designed one for every month of the year. Even better, every one of these patterns is free to download from Ravelry – look there for “January,” “February,” “March,” “April,” “May,” “June,” “July,” “August,” “September,” “October,” “November,” and “December.” This collection shows Germantown’s versatility in a variety of techniques, from ribbing and texture to cables and lace to stripes and colorwork.

Katie’s Kep.

We’re so excited about “Katie’s Kep,” Shetland Wool Week’s featured pattern for 2020!

“Katie’s Kep,” by Wilma Malcolmson, Shetland Wool Week’s featured hat pattern for 2020. Shown in Colourway 4.

This five-color fair isle hat is currently available as a free pattern download from the Shetland Wool Week website. A new Shetland Wool Week hat pattern is something I look forward to every year, so I downloaded it as soon as it was available, and then went straight to our Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift to play the color game. I spent some time putting together four color combinations, inspired by the four colorways shown in the pattern.

Shetland Spindrift is $6.80 per ball, and the project requires 6 balls – 2 in the main color, and 1 each in 4 contrast colors, for a total price of $40.80. We just got a fresh delivery of Shetland Spindrift with this project in mind, so all four colourways are currently in stock – get in touch if you’d like to order yarn for a “Katie’s Kep” of your own!

Sale of the Week: Brooklyn Tweed Ranch 02!

Though we have to keep our doors closed during April, we’re still virtually open for mail orders, and we want to offer something fun during this uncertain time. Throughout April, we’ll have a special sale each week – 15% off a featured yarn, our Sale of the Week!

Our next Sale of the Week is 15% off Brooklyn Tweed Ranch 02, from April 8 – 14!

Ranch 02 is a worsted weight, woolen-spun, limited edition, ranch-specific Rambouillet yarn, which means every fiber in these skeins was sourced from a single flock of sheep living on Forbes Ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming. From there, the wool was scoured at Bollman Industries in Texas, spun at Crescent Woolen Mill in Wisconsin, and dyed at Caledonian Dye Works in Pennsylvania.

The 10-color palette is inspired by the landscape of northern Wyoming, and the sheep that roam the land. This 3 ply yarn is nice and round, and shows texture beautifully. That and its bouncy elasticity make it great fun to knit with, springy and light in the hand, making a soft, cohesive fabric.

Each 50 gram skein of Ranch 02 has 102 yards, and usually costs $16. For this week, it’s 15% off, which comes to $13.60 per skein. 2 skeins makes a hat, 7 skeins makes a shawl, and 10-19 makes a sweater.

Get in touch with us by April 14 to get 15% off BT Ranch 02 – thanks so much for continuing to support our small business!
