Colorwork lovers who are ready for a new challenge, join us in knitting Florence Spurling's
"Scout Shawl," using intarsia and fair isle techniques! "Scout Shawl" was inspired by vintage quilts, and features a variety of stitch patterns and color combinations for a patchwork effect. Choose either the original "Scout Shawl" or the
"Scout Mini-Shawl," both of which are knit flat on circular needles with fingering weight yarn.
We will discuss the shawl construction and the layout of the charts, and ways to stay organized as we make our way through the pattern. We’ll practice joining colors, weaving in ends, and maintaining a consistent fabric.
Experience needed: Students should have completed several fair isle or stranded colorwork projects, and should be comfortable with following a colorwork chart - the pattern only provides charts, not written instructions
Materials:
- Florence Spurling's "Scout Shawl" or "Scout Mini-Shawl," available to purchase on Ravelry
- Fingering weight yarn in 5 colors; see patterns for yardage requirements. Designer Florence Spurling provides the following guidance for selecting your own colors:
- C2 – choose a light neutral (e.g. white, cream, beige, grey, etc.)
- C1 and C5 – choose a lighter and darker tone in the same colour family (e.g. lighter pink for C1, and darker pink for C5).
- C3 and C4 – choose a lighter and darker tone in the same colour family that contrasts with C1 and C5 (e.g. lighter green for C3, and darker green for C4).
- Use the schematic to further check how the colours will be paired together.
- US 4 circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge), 24" or 32" length
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Masks are required in the classroom and in the shop.
- Refunds for pre-paid class registrations can be made only if we are notified at least two weeks in advance of the beginning of class.
- Missed classes will not be made up unless the instructor was unable to teach or the shop was unexpectedly closed.
- Refunds for missed classes cannot be made.

Wednesday early evenings: September 20, 26 and October 4, 2023; 5:45-7:15 pm.
For beginners: learn to knit in the Continental style. We will use the Churchmouse "Stitch-Sampler Hand Warmers" pattern, which is included in the cost of the class.
In the first session, you'll learn the long tail cast on and the knit stitch. In the second session, the purl stitch will be introduced as we move from the cuff to the body of the hand-warmer. In the last session, you'll learn how to bind off and seam your mitts using mattress stitch in both garter and stockinette stitches.
Note: In order to keep moving forward, it is expected that knitting "homework" will be completed each week.
Materials needed:
- 110 yards of smooth, worsted weight yarn in a light color; we recommend Kelbourne Woolens Germantown
- US size 8 knitting needles

- Tapestry/darning needle for seaming and weaving in ends
Materials are available for purchase at the shop.
