Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month: Voe.

Our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month for March is here! Come by this month to see “Voe.”

Designed by Gudrun Johnston for Brooklyn Tweed Loft, “Voe” is a colorwork yoke pullover worked from the bottom up – a style, technique, and construction that I count among my personal favorites.

Loft is a fingering weight, woolen-spun Targhee-Columbia wool. Loft is named for one of its best qualities, which makes it somewhat delicate, but especially warm for its weight. The rustic texture and heathered shades make it an ideal yarn for colorwork, which is apparent in this garment.

We have all 45 colors in stock, and are offering a 10% discount on Loft throughout March – come by the shop to see “Voe” for yourself and plan your next project!

Amy is offering a class on it, to guide you through the fit, construction, and finishing details – read all about it on our Classes page!

“Orime” is knit with Peerie, Brooklyn Tweed’s fingering weight merino. It comes in 45 colors, so there’s plenty to choose from. Even better, we’re offering them at 10% off during February – come by soon to take advantage of this discount!

The Weekender KAL: show and tell.

Back in April 2019, Anne and I embarked on an informal knit-along, knitting Andrea Mowry’s “The Weekender” sweater and inviting anyone and everyone to join us. We were delighted that so many folks were inspired to make the sweater, each bringing their own style and taste to this simple design, each knitting at their own pace. Some finished right away and then had to wait patiently for sweater weather to arrive, others signed up for Amy’s Weekender class to have her guidance as they knit along through the fall and winter. Many are still knitting, and we’re looking forward to seeing their sweaters in use this winter or next. As far as I’m concerned, our KAL has no end-date, so consider this round of Weekender KAL show and tell the first of many!

Michele was the first to finish. She knit her “Weekender” with Debbie Bliss Luxury Tweed she picked up on sale a few years ago, putting that sweater quantity to good use.

Here’s Debbie in her “Weekender,” knit with Brooklyn Tweed Shelter in Snowbound, BT’s softest gray. Something about the reverse stockinette seems to let the heathered colorway shine – flecks of dark gray and black pop out from the overall light color, giving a simple stitch pattern more interest.

Anne and I had our own “Weekenders” on display at the shop all through the fall, and in fact, hers is still hanging – I was excited to wear mine and brought it home last month! Anne’s is on the left, knit with Shelter in Soot, and mine is on the right, knit with Kelbourne Woolens Scout in Sunflower Heather.

Amy is well into teaching a handful of classes on “The Weekender,” and so finished hers in a productive flurry of preparation for teaching. She used Shelter in the marled Caraway color, a good match for this design, with its plain texture and simple shape. She also modified the neckline for a turtleneck, and opted to knit the entire body in the round and steek the armhole openings – very clever!

Many thanks to Michele, Debbie, and Amy for sharing their sweaters and knitting along with us! We know there are many other Weekenders in various stages of completion out there in our HYS knitting community – let us know how it’s going, we can’t wait to see you all in your sweaters!

Julie Hoover + Shibui Knits, Winter 2020.

Designer Julie Hoover has collaborated on something special with Shibui this season – a pattern collection and three special colorways which we are thrilled to have on our shelves now!

Hoover’s three shades are Glacier, Vintage Rose, and Black Plum, an icy pale blue, a pink, and a deep purple. They fit beautifully in Shibui’s existing color palate, but represent distinctly new additions.

These three shades are available in five Shibui yarns: the lace weight Pebble, Silk Cloud, and Tweed Silk Cloud, sport weight Twig, and DK weight Nest.

Julie Hoover has made beautiful use of these yarns in this Winter 2020 collection, combining them to make unique fiber blends and sumptuous textures. She’s brought her signature attention to detail to each one, offering options for customizing many of them.

“Wells” is a cowl that comes in two lengths, for example, and the “Layton” pullover has optional cuffs.

“Blume” is perhaps the most customizable – this sweater comes in a sleeveless style as well as long sleeved, and can be made with Twig alone for a summery feel, or with Twig and Silk Cloud together for more warmth.

We have sample copies of all five patterns available for your perusal; you can purchase any of them on Ravelry. Come by to see these tempting yarns and patterns for yourself!

Our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month for January is here! Come by this month to see “Slade.”

“Slade” is a cardigan designed by Michele Wang for BT Men in 2013, which was then and is still now a rarity in hand knitting: a collection of garments for men. Even better, we’re offering them at 10% off during January – come by soon to take advantage of this discount!

Back in stock, show and tell: Malabrigo.

Year in and year out, Malabrigo yarns are among the most popular in our shop. Sometimes it feels like we place Malabrigo orders for the shop every week, but not every week yields an order as big as our most recent – this was a sizeable restock, indeed!

Here are bags and bags of Malabrigo Sock, Mechita, Washted, Mecha, Rasta, Caracol, and Nube, waiting to be unpacked.

As usual, knitters and crocheters we know have been busy making shawls and sweaters using Malabrigo yarns – time for some show and tell!

Here is Nancy’s “Kelp Garden Sweater,” which she crocheted using Malabrigo Mechita and CoopKnits Socks Yeah! This incredible sweater won second place at the NC State Fair this year – congratulations, Nancy!

Above is another Mechita project – Anne knit Joji Locatelli’s “Storm” shawl with just one skein, in the pattern’s namesake colorway. She started and ripped out several other shawls with this speckled yarn before landing on “Storm,” which turned out to be just the right pattern, the dropped stitches showing off the painterly yarn just so.

Below is Cindy’s “Troupe” shawl, knit with Malabrigo Dos Tierras in a playful color combination.

Pam knit this “Dog Star” pullover for her grandson using Malabrigo Rios. This is a favorite sweater pattern of mine, and Anne’s, too – we’ve each made several of these, and seen knitters around us make many more. I love Pam’s color choice, the bright “Cian” blue jumping out against the deep “Paris Night.”

Thanks to the knitters, crocheters, and weavers who bring in their work to show us what they’ve made! You inspire and amaze us, and we can’t wait to see what you get into next.

The shop is currently closed for a Thanksgiving break, but we’ll reopen at our regular business hours on Tuesday, December 3, and look forward to seeing you soon!

Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month: BT Kids.

Our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month for November is here! Come by this month to see selections from the BT Kids collection.

When we were planning our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month program, Anne was especially excited to see “Atlas (For Kids),” a colorwork yoke that called her grandchildren to mind. When Kel at Brooklyn Tweed offered to lend us anything from the BT Kids collection, we jumped – you’ll find six pieces on display this month!

All of them are knit with Loft, Brooklyn Tweed’s signature fingering weight, woolen-spun yarn. It comes in 45 colors and we’re delighted to report that we have them all in stock. Even better, we’re offering them at 10% off during November!

We’ll be closed for a Thanksgiving break from Wednesday, November 27 – Monday, December 2, reopening at our regular business hours on Tuesday, December 3, so if you’re anxious to see these samples and get Loft at a discount, plan your visit accordingly. We hope to see you soon!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges, returns, or special orders. Thanks!

Hello, Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month!

We’re delighted to announce that starting in September, we’ll have a new Brooklyn Tweed sample on display each month!

We’ve been working with Kel at Brooklyn Tweed to put together a schedule of garment and accessory samples that showcase a wide variety of techniques and styles in the full range of BT yarns, from lace weight Vale all the way up to bulky weight Quarry.

Going through the back catalog of Brooklyn Tweed designs was so much fun! Anne and I picked a few that caught our eye, as did our teachers, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Just as we do for Shibui, we’ll offer 10% off the featured Brooklyn Tweed yarn while each sample is here. This month, it’s Arbor, BT’s worsted spun DK weight wool, a yarn with superb stitch definition and lots of bounce.

Our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month for September is “Kirigami,” by Gudrun Johnston, a textured yoke pullover that shows exactly what I mean when I say “superb stitch definition.”

I’ve just cast on for a “Kirigami” of my own, in fact – it’s a pattern that’s been in the back of my mind since its appearance in a trunk show last year, and this time I couldn’t resist it. I’m using the sleeve as a swatch, blocking it after 6″ or so to get a good sense of my gauge in the round, and to have a head-start on the project if my gauge happens to match the pattern gauge on this first try!

Come by during September to see “Kirigami” in person, try it on for size, and get 10% off Brooklyn Tweed Arbor to make one of your own!

A reminder: there will be no returns or exchanges on yarn that’s purchased at a discount. Thanks!
