What to knit with BT Tones Light?

Brooklyn Tweed’s new yarn, Tones Light, is already turning heads here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. What to knit with this colorful stuff? Here are some ideas!

Jared Flood designed two new patterns especially for this yarn, “Shadow Stripe Pullover” and “All Ways Hat.”

Because Tones Light can easily substitute for Loft or Peerie, there’s a world of patterns to choose from; here are some ideas from both the Brooklyn Tweed pattern archive and independent designers!

I’m the lucky knitter with the assignment of making a shop sample in Tones Light, and all of these vibrant colors had me thinking of Stephen West. I picked “Painting Parallelograms” from Painting Shawls, a slip stitch scarf whose shape and texture intrigued me. I picked three shades of Tones Light for the contrast colors, and a speckled skein of Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Sock for the main – here’s a peek at my progress so far.

New colors in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter!

We’re excited to have 12 new shades of Brooklyn Tweed Shelter here at our shop!

Brooklyn Tweed Shelter:

  • worsted weight
  • woolen-spun, 2 ply
  • 100% Targhee-Columbia wool
  • 140 yards/50 g
  • $15.50 each

Shelter is Brooklyn Tweed’s first yarn, and one of the most well-loved – a worsted weight, woolen-spun Targhee-Columbia wool, sourced, dyed, and spun entirely in the USA. So far, all the colors have been created by dyeing the fiber in 16 vibrant solids, then blending them, two or three at a time, into intricate heathers. This new batch of colors is skein-dyed, inspired by nature and designed to enhance and play well with the existing Shelter palette.

Laine Magazine, No. 10.

Laine Magazine is back from a hiatus with their 10th issue!

Laine Magazine is a publication out of Finland, a knitting and lifestyle magazine with a love of natural fibers as its focus, and a reputation for beautiful designs and tantalizing photography.

Issue 10 features patterns from an amazing group of designers, the likes of Denise Bayron, Julie Hoover, Tif Neilan, Veera Välimäki, Sylvia Watts-Cherry, and more.

Beyond the patterns, there are seasonal recipes and plenty of good reading – I’m particularly excited to read the interview with Denise Bayron, and an article about BIPOC in Fiber by Jeanette Sloan.

Julie Hoover + Shibui Knits, Winter 2020.

Designer Julie Hoover has collaborated on something special with Shibui this season – a pattern collection and three special colorways which we are thrilled to have on our shelves now!

Hoover’s three shades are Glacier, Vintage Rose, and Black Plum, an icy pale blue, a pink, and a deep purple. They fit beautifully in Shibui’s existing color palate, but represent distinctly new additions.

These three shades are available in five Shibui yarns: the lace weight Pebble, Silk Cloud, and Tweed Silk Cloud, sport weight Twig, and DK weight Nest.

Julie Hoover has made beautiful use of these yarns in this Winter 2020 collection, combining them to make unique fiber blends and sumptuous textures. She’s brought her signature attention to detail to each one, offering options for customizing many of them.

“Wells” is a cowl that comes in two lengths, for example, and the “Layton” pullover has optional cuffs.

“Blume” is perhaps the most customizable – this sweater comes in a sleeveless style as well as long sleeved, and can be made with Twig alone for a summery feel, or with Twig and Silk Cloud together for more warmth.

New colors in Shibui Twig.

Shibui recently expanded their color palette for Twig, a unique yarn that has become a staple of our sport weight section.

Twig is a slightly textured, sometimes tweedy blend of 46% linen, 42% recycled silk, and 12% wool. Each 50 gram skein has 190 yards, and it knits up at a sport or dk weight gauge into an open, draping fabric.

Twig has a crisp feel and a plant fiber’s tendency to stretch rather than cling, qualities that make it ideal for warm weather garments and accessories like Shibui’s “Slope” and “Tier,” or Churchmouse’s “Simple Tee.” If you like a little more elasticity, consider holding Twig together with Cima, Lunar, or Pebble, as in Shibui’s “Apex” and “Crete,” or Julie Hoover’s “Wintour.”

Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show: Winter 18.

We’re excited to have a new Trunk Show decorating our walls. Come by the shop before October 14 to see the Brooklyn Tweed Winter 18 collection!

The Brooklyn Tweed design team is prolific, and creates new pattern collections several times a year. Each one is met with excitement here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop; Anne and I often scroll through the lookbook together on launch day, pointing out sweaters we’d love to make.

We’ve been especially looking forward to seeing Norah Gaughan’s “Geiger” cardigan, shown on the right in Kettle black. It caught Amy’s eye as soon as the collection was published in January, and she’s cooking up a class on this intricate cabled cardigan for Spring 2019. Let us know if you’re interested in such a class, and we’ll be sure to notify you when more details are available!

For me, Gudrun Johnston’s “Kirigami” and Julie Hoover’s “Nolan” are the stars of this show, patterns I’ve been looking forward to seeing. Both of these, like “Geiger,” are knit with Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, an ideal yarn for showing off texture patterns. Anne and I both took a shine to Jared Flood’s “Freja,” a quick short-sleeved knit in Quarry. Which are your favorites?

Seeing these garments close up and in person is one of the great joys of a Trunk Show. Another joy is trying them on for size, making sure you like the fit and feel before you invest in a big project. Shibui Sample of the Month: Wintour.

January is here, and with it, a new Shibui Sample of the Month! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarn purchased for our featured sample til the end of the month.

 

This month’s featured sample is “Wintour,” by Julie Hoover, a relaxed pullover in stockinette stitch, with repeating purl stripes and knit 2, purl 2 ribbing.

It’s knit with Shibui Twig and Shibui Pebble held together throughout, for a balanced blend of drapey linen and fluffy merino and cashmere. The resulting fabric is cohesive, mid-weight, perfect for a near-year-round pullover.

Shibui’s colors match from one line of yarn to another, for the most part, so you can find a matching shade in Twig and Pebble for this project. A soft neutral shade seems to suit the casual, everyday design, but a pop of color may be more your style – Shibui excels in both these categories.

Friends of Shibui Trunk Show.

Another trunk show has arrived, another opportunity to see hand-knit garments in person, which is always better than in photographs. Come by the shop before November 24th, 2015, to see garments by independent designers Julie Hoover and Steve Rousseau knit in Shibui yarns!

We have five of Julie Hoover’s designs on the wall, four sweaters and one cowl, and they all share that elegant, simple-with-a-twist aesthetic that Shibui is known for.

Steve Rousseau’s designs are something very different: contemporary lace shawls with graphic, geometric motifs. We have seven of his rectangular shawls on display and one triangular shawl, and they all beg to be admired and studied closely.

All the garments in this show are made with Shibui Pebble, a lace weight blend of 48% recycled silk, 36% wool, and 16% cashmere.

Most of these pieces use this delicate yarn held singly, but a few sweaters are knit with two strands of Pebble held together throughout, for a thicker fabric.
