Fibre Company Trunk Show: Summer Sweaters.

We’re so excited to announce that we’ve just received a Trunk Show featuring Fibre Company yarns and patterns. The Summer Sweater collection will be on display here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop until July 20th, and we have all the yarns and patterns to make these garments your own!

DSCN3193

The Summer Sweater collection consists of six garments knit in Fibre Company’s most warm-weather-friendly yarns, Savannah and Meadow. Each yarn is composed of both plant and animal fibers, giving the finished fabric a nice blend of elasticity and drape.

DSCN2993

Savannah is a sport weight mix of wool, cotton, linen, and soya, and Meadow is a blend of merino, llama, linen, and silk spun into a lace/fingering weight yarn.

We have shawls made in each one of these yarns, but they are just as well suited to sweater-making, and it’s a treat to see that in person. Trunk shows like these are a unique opportunity to touch and try on for size before you cast on for a project.

“Sonora” is my favorite, a simple tee with cap sleeves that I’m sure I’d wear all the time. This collection offers a range of tees and tanks, with different color and texture patterns making each one unique.

Come by the shop before July 20th to admire the Summer Sweaters Trunk Show, try them on for size, and plan one for yourself!

Shibui Trunk Show!

We’re delighted to announce that we’re hosting a Shibui Trunk Show, featuring 6 garments and accessories knit in Shibui yarns.

DSCN2849

Shibui yarns are designed to be knit on their own or held together, using two or three strands at a time to make bespoke yarn blends. We currently stock three Shibui yarns, all lace weight: CimaPebble, and Silk Cloud. Some of these trunk show garments are knit with one or two of those yarns, and some of these garments combine them with Shibui yarns that we don’t keep in stock at the shop, like Shibui Heichi and Linen. We’re happy to order any of those yarns for you if you’re willing to prepay for a special order.

DSCN2851

We have a stack of swatches at the shop that illustrate how Shibui yarns behave in different combinations: Cima knit with Pebble, Silk Cloud held double, etc. A swatch can tell us a lot, but a whole garment tells us even more. A trunk show is a great opportunity to see, touch, and try on finished garments in these yarn combinations, demystifying the Mix concept and making it easier to choose which size to make.

These garments will be on display at the shop from April 1st – 15th — come by soon to see them yourself!

Fibre Company Trunk Show!

We are delighted to announce that we’re hosting a Fibre Company Trunk Show, now through October 20th!

These 8 shawls and scarves make up designer Grace Anna Farrow’s Allium Collection.

All are designed for and knit with Fibre Company’s newest yarn, Meadow, a lace weight blend of merino wool, llama, silk, and linen. This bewitching combination of plant and animal fibers is typical of the Fibre Company, who seem to always be seeking new and interesting fiber combinations.

DSCN2057

The yarn itself is scheduled to arrive soon, along with all 8 patterns of the Allium Collection–though they are also available as Ravelry In-Store Pattern Sales, so we can always get you a copy that way.

DSCN2068

Come by the shop to see the Allium Collection for yourself, and if you’d like to sample Meadow and three other Fibre Company yarns, sign up for the upcoming Fibre Company Yarn Tasting! It promises to be a delightful and inspiring morning of stitching, sipping, and munching. We’d love to see you there!

Fibre Company Yarn Tasting.

We’re delighted to announce that we have an exciting event coming up: a yarn tasting featuring four yarns from the Fibre Company, a small yarn company out of Pennsylvania. The Fibre Company combines plant and animal fibers in interesting ways, seeking yarns that provide both softness and structure. Their patterns put their yarns to good use in accessories and garments alike.

DSCN1260

A yarn tasting allows you to try out yarn before deciding to buy it, working up a little swatch to see how it feels in your hands and how it behaves as a fabric. Attendees will bring needles or hooks in a variety of sizes and we’ll serve up samples of four yarns from the Fibre Company, along with bagels, fruit, and mimosas.

  • Meadow: a lace weight blend of merino wool, baby llama, silk, and linen
  • Savannah: a sport weight blend of wool, cotton, linen, and soya
  • Acadia: a dk weight blend of merino wool, baby alpaca, and silk
  • Canopy Worsted: a light worsted weight blend of baby alpaca, merino wool, and viscose from bamboo

DSCN2020

We’ll have a Meadow trunk show to inspire, and pattern ideas for all four yarns. Get a 15% discount on Fibre Company purchases and pre-paid orders made during the yarn tasting.

DSCN2031

The Fibre Company Yarn Tasting is scheduled for Sunday, October 20th, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. There is a small fee for attending, so that we might cover the cost of food and drink, and because of our small space, we’re limiting this event to 15 people. It’s filling up quickly–sign up now to save your space! If you can’t make it to the yarn tasting, no worries–I’ll report back here on the blog and tell you all about it.

No. 11, No. 12, No. 13 … Trunk Show.

The last of our expected Isager Trunk Shows has arrived!

DSCN1321

Come by the shop to see garments from No. 11, No. 12, No. 13 … , a collection of knit and crochet patterns from Danish designers using Isager yarns. As ever, the garments are more vivid in person than in photographs, and it makes such a difference to touch the fabric that these yarns create, to see the colors with your own eyes, and to try on a sweater for size before you decide to make it.

Do come by soon, before these garments have to move on to their next destination, and see more of what’s possible with Isager yarns. See you at the shop!

Amimono: the Bird/Little Bird Trunk Show.

Another gorgeous Trunk Show has arrived at the shop, this time featuring garments from Helga Isager’s Amimono Book 4, the Bird/Little Bird Collection.

It’s always a treat to see the Isager yarns in finished pieces, and to get a better sense of the lightweight but sturdy fabric they create. Come by the shop to see and touch these garments for yourself!

Hat Ladies Trunk Show.

First: sorry for the website interruption! We’re happy to be up and running again, ready for new blog posts and class listings.

Next: the latest Trunk Show has arrived, featuring garments from Annette Danielsen’s Hat Ladies collection.

As usual, the Isager yarns shine in person. It’s one thing to see an exquisite finished knit in a beautifully designed booklet, and another to hold said knit in your hand and get a first-person sense of the texture.

Come by the shop to see these whimsical hats, scarves, and cowls in person, and to plan your next project. See you there!

Swans Island Trunk Show.

The Swans Island Trunk Show is here!

For the next couple of weeks, we have sweaters, accessories, a baby blanket, and the incredible Swans Island Coat on loan from Swans Island.

Most of these are made in their Organic Merino Worsted, and some in Organic Merino Fingering. Both yarns make soft fabric that drapes beautifully, with excellent stitch definition. We also have new patterns to give you even more ideas of how to use this special yarn.

Come by the shop to see these beautiful garments while they’re here, and to see how the Swans Island yarns behave when knitted up. See you at the shop!

Ewe Ewe Trunk Show.

We’re delighted to share our latest Trunk Show with you: a bundle of garments made up in Ewe Ewe Wooly Worsted Washable.

We’re not short on worsted weight, washable wools at the shop, but this one in particular has become a Hillsborough Yarn Shop favorite for accessories and baby things in rich solid colors.

It’s incredibly soft, obedient on the needles, and comes with plenty of pattern support. Along with the Ewe Ewe Trunk Show, we got lots of Ewe Ewe patterns in, and extra yarn in every available color.

Come by the shop to see, touch, and try on this collection of hats, cowls, sweaters, mitts, and baby things, and to plan your next project in Ewe Ewe Wooly Worsted Washable!

All You Knit is Love Trunk Show.

Another Isager Trunk Show has arrived, a few weeks earlier than expected.

We have four tiny garments on display, selections from Susie Haumann’s collection of knits for babies from 0-18 months, All You Knit is Love. Each one is made with Isager yarns, from Tvinni to Alpaca 1 and 2, sometimes held singly, sometimes doubly, for a bigger gauge.

Even if you’re not in a tiny-sweater-knitting mood, the All You Knit is Love Trunk Show is a must-see (and must-touch!) for anyone interested in working with Isager yarns. It’s always hard to tell what will happen to the colors and textures of two yarns knit together. Will the colors blend together, or will one strand stand out from another? If you hold Alpaca 1 together with Highland, do you feel the fuzzy alpaca or the sturdy wool in the finished fabric? Seeing garments made in these yarns, especially those that combine yarns, can give you a better sense of how these yarns work together after they’ve been knit up, washed, and blocked.

Come by soon to see these sweet little knits for yourself!
