Brooklyn Tweed Capsule Trunk Show!

Our walls are newly decorated with a Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show! Come by the shop by July 2nd to see Michele Wang’s Capsule collection.

Michele Wang designed this collection of garments and accessories with loungewear in mind, the kind of cozy, wearable knits one might fantasize about curling up in all winter. Like so many of Wang’s patterns for Brooklyn Tweed yarns, these are intricate and deeply-textured, designed with great attention to detail.

Four of these designs call for Shelter, Brooklyn Tweed’s worsted weight, woolen-spun Targhee-Columbia wool, which we currently have in every available color. The same can be said of Loft, Shelter’s fingering weight counterpart, used in two of these patterns. The remainder are knit in Quarry, a bulky weight that we don’t currently stock; we’re happy to special order it for you if you fall in love with one of these designs.

Though all of these woolen-spun yarns have a bit of a rustic quality, they clearly have the stitch definition it takes to render complex cable patterns beautifully, and seeing these textured fabrics close up and in person is one of the great joys of a Trunk Show. Another joy is trying them on for size, making sure you like the fit and feel before you invest in a big project. We like to add one more joy: a 10% discount on purchases of the featured BT yarns during the trunk show, including prepaid special orders of Quarry.

BT Yokes Trunk Show!

Our walls are newly decorated with a Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show! Visit us by Sunday, May 28th, to see the BT Yokes collection in all its glory.

BT Yokes is primarily a collection of pullover sweaters, though there are a couple of cleverly shaped cowls in the group. All of these pieces are informed by a long tradition of handknit sweaters with circular yokes across the North Atlantic. Read more about it on the BT blog for greater insight into that history, and if your interest is piqued, come by the shop to pick up a copy of Kate Davies’ superb Yokes.

Some of the garments in the BT Yokes collection are knit with Loft, and others with Shelter; one chunky cabled pullover is made with Quarry, Brooklyn Tweed’s bulky weight yarn. Though we don’t currently stock Quarry here at the shop, we’re happy to special order it for you, and we do have the colorcard so you can see all the shades in person.

Loft and Shelter we keep in good supply – it’s such a pleasure to have every available shade here on our shelves, and it makes it so much easier to play with color combinations for fair isle patterns like these!

I was particularly pleased to see one of the marls in Shelter put to good use on the body of the “Atlas” pullover; it can be hard to picture how marls will knit up, so a good-sized sample is more than welcome.

Another Baa Ram Ewe Trunk Show!

Our newest Trunk Show has arrived, another gorgeous group of knits from Baa Ram Ewe! Here are four pieces from the Yorkshire Shores collection, knit with Dovestone DK.

Dovestone DK is a blend of masham, wensleydale, and bluefaced leicester wools, all sourced and spun in the UK, an effort to revitalize the textile industry of Yorkshire.

I have a special fondness for this yarn, having knit a cardigan with it last year; it’s sturdy and soft, a good combination for sweaters and home accessories alike.

Yorkshire Shores is a beautiful collection of garments and accessories inspired by Yorkshire ganseys. The shapes are modern, casual and intended for day-to-day wear, but the stitch patterns are traditional – note the detail on the back collar of the “Flamborough” cardigan.

Baa Ram Ewe Trunk Show!

We were delighted to receive a trunk show from Baa Ram Ewe today, featuring four garments knit in their newest yarn, Dovestone Natural Aran.

For a small show, it packs in a lot of variety, with one sweater each for man, woman, and child, along with a lacy fringed cowl.

Find these patterns and more in the Dovestone Natural Aran Collection booklet. Some of them are available as single patterns through Ravelry, as well, so if there’s only one you love, you don’t have to commit to the whole book.

Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show!

We are delighted to announce that our first-ever Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show has arrived!

From now until March 19th, 2017, we’ll have eight garments from the Brooklyn Tweed archives on display, and we’re offering BT yarns at a 10% discount.

As soon as we became a Brooklyn Tweed stockist in January, we began planning a trunk show, eager to see their glorious designs in person. They kindly sent over a list of garments in the warehouse and let us put together a curated trunk show of our own.

This group reflects Anne’s taste and mine, though we tried to strike a balance of men’s and women’s sweaters using a variety of techniques. In muted neutrals and shades of blue and green, they run the gamut from colorwork and texture patterns to good old stockinette, which always flatters the wearer.

Some of these were knit in Shelter, and some in Loft, Brooklyn Tweed’s signature woolen-spun, US-sourced, 100% Targhee-Columbia wools in worsted and fingering weights, respectively.

Along with the Trunk Show, we also brought in hard copies of all of the featured patterns, which are beautifully printed on cardstock. Come by the shop to flip through a binder full of them and admire the garments themselves in living color. Even better, you can try them on for size, and plan your next project in Brooklyn Tweed yarns, all at a 10% discount. See you at the shop!

Shibui Trunk Show: Fall/Winter 2016 Collection.

Over the weekend, one trunk show came down, and a new one went right up. Come by the shop soon to see Shibui’s Fall/Winter 2016 Collection.

The Fall/Winter 2016 pattern collection, by Shellie Anderson, makes good use of their newest yarn, Drift, though you’ll also see plenty of other familiar Shibui yarns like Staccato, Cima, Dune, Maai, and Pebble.

These garments continue in the Shibui tradition of modern, wearable pieces, designed with elegant simplicity but great attention to detail.

Arranmore Collection Trunk Show!

Yesterday we were pleasantly surprised to receive a highly-anticipated trunk show a full week earlier than expected. Come by the shop to see the Kelbourne Woolens Arranmore Collection in person!

This group of cozy garments and accessories is named for the yarn it features: Fibre Company Arranmore, a bulky weight tweed composed of merino, cashmere and silk.

One of the most notable qualities of Arranmore is its loftiness in spite of its bulky gauge. Sweaters knit in bulky yarn can droop and sag with time, but Arranmore holds its shape, warm but not heavy.

Anne’s completed “Carrowkeel” hangs with this show, though if you’ve been to the shop in the last month or so you’ve likely seen it already. It’s such a classic, this simple stockinette turtleneck, and it looks even better on than it does on the wall. Though the wall is where it’s lived since she sewed its last seam, I did convince her to pose for a photo.

Tundra Collection Trunk Show!

A new Trunk Show has arrived to inspire and delight Hillsborough Yarn Shoppers! Come by soon to see the Tundra Collection and Tundra: Elements.

The Tundra Collection features hats, cowls, and other winter accessories knit in the soft, luxurious, and brand-new-to-the-shop Fibre Company Tundra. (More on that soon!)

None of these garments require more than 3 skeins of Tundra to make, so they’re quick, satisfying projects.

Tundra: Elements is a booklet of sweater patterns all derived from one simple design, a cozy raglan.

Add stripes or pockets, choose a hood, v-neck, henley, or turtleneck, and the look changes entirely, though the basic shape is the same.

Isager Trunk Show!

We’re delighted to announce that a new trunk show has arrived to decorate our walls this month! Come by the shop before August 31st to see an array of garments and accessories knit in Isager yarns.

Isager is a Danish yarn company run by designers Marianne Isager and her daughter, Helga Isager.

Their yarns are mostly lace and fingering weight, and often combined two or three strands at a time to create bespoke fiber blends and unique colorways.

Isager has long been a favorite of ours here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop; Anne’s knit a handful of Isager patterns, guided knitters through plenty more, and even traveled to Denmark to study with Marianne and Helga a few years ago.

You’ll find our shop well-stocked with Isager yarns like Alpaca 1, Alpaca 2, Spinni, Tvinni, and Tweed.
