Local Yarn Store Day.

We’re looking forward to the second annual Local Yarn Store Day, this Saturday, April 27th!

LYS Day is about celebrating brick-and-mortar yarn shops and appreciating all that they offer. Here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, we are proud of our selection of high quality yarns, books and tools, our talented teachers, and our customer service. Our mission is and has always been to provide knitters and other fiber artists with quality materials and help connect them with the knowledge they need to make things they’re proud of.

One thing that makes local yarn stores like ours special is the opportunity to see and touch yarn for yourself before buying it. Sometimes we even have yarn tastings, special events where you can work with a variety of yarns to see how you like them. For LYS Day, we’re setting up a Shibui swatching station, so you can try a variety of Shibui yarns for yourself. We’re also offering 15% off Shibui yarns on LYS Day, and a raffle with a Shibui kit as the prize!

Another perk of a local yarn shop is access to limited edition yarns and colorways. To that end, we’ll have a special LYS Day colorway from Dream in Color just for the event, and a free pattern for those who purchase that yarn! This 2ply BFL Cash/Silk colorway celebrates 100 years of National Park Service at the Grand Canyon, and Dream in Color is donating 10% of their sales of this color to the Grand Canyon Conservancy. They’ve also dyed complementary semisolid shades to go with it, perfect for a “Riotous Shawl,” by Jessica Correa.

Come by the Hillsborough Yarn Shop this Saturday to take advantage of 15% off all in-stock Shibui yarns, and to knit with them before you buy – we love nothing more than helping you plan your next project!

Thanks for supporting local yarn shops like ours, we are so grateful for the community that sustains us!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted items; there will be no exchanges or returns. Thanks!

Hello, Shibui Vine.

Meet Shibui’s newest yarn, Vine!

Vine is a unique combination of 41% paper, 31% cotton, and 28% silk. The texture is notable, too – a flat yarn wrapped in lustrous, overlapping threads.

Vine is in the DK weight section, though the suggested gauge ranges from 4.5 – 5 stitches per inch.

I knit a swatch on US size 6 needles, washed and blocked it, and the resulting fabric is lightweight and a little crunchy, though it drapes gently. It seems the perfect material for knitting spring and summer tops.

That’s just what Anne is making with Vine, in fact. Below is her “Amos” in progress, using Shibui Fern with Vine for subtle textural stripes.

Come by the shop to see Vine and other Shibui yarns – we keep Pebble, Cima, Silk Cloud, Lunar, Staccato, Reed, Birch, Twig, Fern, Rain, Echo, Maai, and Drift in stock, and have knit samples in most of them. We also have a new sample borrowed from Shibui each month, to spark project ideas and give a tangible sense of how these yarns knit up. We hope you find inspiration here!

Shibui Sample of the Month: Stoa.

March is here, and with it, a new Shibui Sample of the Month! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarn purchased for our featured sample until the end of the month.

This month’s sample is Anne Ginger’s “Stoa,” a flared ribbed scarf. The pattern is available for free when you buy Shibui Echo here at our shop.

“Stoa” is knit with Shibui Echo, a DK weight blend of 48% fine merino wool and 52% silk noil, where each ply is only one of those fibers. The two strands of silk noil stand out against the merino for a slightly marled look, just a bit of texture in the knit fabric.

Come by the shop to before March 26th to try on “Stoa” and get Shibui Echo at 10% off to make one of your own!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges, returns, or special orders. Thanks!

Shibui Sample of the Month: Half and Half Cowl.

February is here, and with it, a new Shibui Sample of the Month! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarn purchased for our featured sample until the end of the month.

This month’s sample is the Churchmouse “Half and Half Cowl,” a simple ribbed cowl with a slit halfway up to create an opening over the shoulder.

“Half and Half Cowl” is knit with Shibui Drift, a worsted weight blend of 85% extra fine merino wool and 15% cashmere. It’s just as soft as that combination sounds, a perfect choice for a special accessory like this.

Come by the shop to before February 26th to try on the “Half and Half Cowl” and get Shibui Drift at 10% off to make one of your own!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges, returns, or special orders. Thanks!

Shibui Sample of the Month: Aalto.

A new Shibui Sample of the Month arrived in tandem with our current Shibui Trunk Show! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarn purchased for our featured sample until the end of the month.

January’s Sample of the Month is Shellie Anderson’s “Aalto,” a graceful poncho with thoughtful shoulder shaping for a flattering fit. Though it was originally designed for the summery Twig, this sample was knit with Shibui Pebble and Silk Cloud, a luxurious and lightweight combination.

Come by the shop to try on “Aalto” and see the Shibui FW 2018 Trunk Show – we hope you find inspiration here!

Shibui FW 2018 Trunk Show!

The Shibui FW18 Trunk Show arrived early, much to our delight!

This collection features many of our favorite Shibui yarns, including Birch, Cima, Drift, Lunar, Maai, Pebble, Silk Cloud, and their newest yarn, Echo – all of which will be 10% off during the trunk show. The patterns are pleasingly named for influential female writers – “Angelou,” “Sontag,” “Plath,” and so on.

This two-tone cowl, “Didion,” is created by simply knitting two rectangles and grafting them to create interlocking loops, like the links of a chain. The pattern is free when you purchase the yarn from our shop.

As ever, many of these garments use two or more yarns held together to create unique fabric, and they share that elegant, simple-with-a-twist aesthetic that Shibui is known for.

All of the patterns are available as Ravelry In-Store Pattern Sales, where we print a copy for you and a digital copy is also saved in your email or Ravelry pattern library. Visit us before January 22nd to plan your next project in Shibui yarns!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted yarn, so there can be no returns or exchanges. Thanks!

Shibui Sample of the Month: Madison.

December is here, and with it, a new Shibui Sample of the Month! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarn purchased for our featured sample until the end of the month.

December’s sample is “Madison,” a tubular ribbed scarf designed to look like a sweater sleeve. The pattern is free when you purchase the yarn to make it from our shop, and the yarn is Birch, a single ply sport weight merino wool.

For this pattern, you hold three strands of Birch together as you knit, which makes a thicker gauge, a plush texture, and better stitch definition than you might expect.

Come by the shop this month to see “Madison” and get Shibui Birch at 10% off to make one of your own!

Shibui Sample of the Month: Tempo.

November is here, and with it, a new Shibui Sample of the Month! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarn purchased for our featured sample until the end of the month.

This month’s sample is “Tempo,” a two-color cowl knit with Shibui Maai. Maai is a DK weight blend of alpaca and merino, soft and lofty due to its chainette construction. This yarn has tremendous elasticity, making it a pleasure to work with and to wear. The colorwork effect is achieved through slipped stitches, a technique that requires using only one color of yarn per row.

Come by the shop this month to see “Tempo” and get Shibui Maai at 10% off to make one of your own!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges, returns, or special orders. Thanks!

New colors from Shibui.

This fall, Shibui introduced a new yarn, Echo, but they also added two new colors to nearly every line of yarn they make.

Deep Water is a blue green shade, leaning more towards blue than Fjord or Cove, two similar colors from Shibui.

Dusk is a slippery color, looking navy in some lights and purple or gray in others. Shibui excels in creating interesting neutrals, and I think this color qualifies.

Shibui has also expanded the color palettes of several yarns to include Bone and White, introduced to their spring and summer yarns earlier in the year.

Since we sort our yarns by gauge here at the shop, you’ll find these new colors sprinkled all around. Look for Pebble, Cima, Silk Cloud, and Lunar in the lace weight corner, Birch in the sport weight section, Maai hanging on the DK tree, and Drift in a worsted weight cubby.

See you at the shop!

Hello, Shibui Echo.

Shibui’s new yarn is here! Meet Echo.

Echo is a DK weight blend of 48% fine merino wool and 52% silk noil, where each ply is only one of those fibers. The two strands of silk noil stand out against the merino for a slightly marled look, just a bit of texture in the knit fabric.

Echo comes in 14 rich colors, ranging from delicate neutrals to bold jewel tones. Many of these colors will be familiar to those who have worked with Shibui yarns before, as these same colors appear in most of their yarns.

There are two brand new shades here, however – Deep Water and Dusk – and they are now available in many other favorite Shibui yarns, as well. More on that soon!

Like all Shibui yarns, Echo is designed to make beautiful fabric on its own, but also to play well with other yarns, making a unique fiber and color blend. Each Shibui yarn brings its signature characteristics to the table, and the Shibui design team has created some exciting new patterns with these pairings in mind. Echo and Silk Cloud makes for plush, fuzzy knits, as in “Didion,” while Lunar brings drape and shine in “Woolf,” and Cima brings elasticity and a bit of a halo in “Plath.”

Check out the full Fall/Winter 18 Collection on Ravelry, and look for Echo in the DK weight section here at the shop!
