New books for knitters.

Right as you walk into the shop, you’ll find a small wooden teacart, though you may not recognize it as such. We’ve disguised it by keeping it piled high with the newest books and magazines, along with the ever present swift and ballwinder. The past few weeks have brought a variety of new books to the … [more]

Show and tell: shawls.

Here’s another batch of show and tell, projects that started their lives as yarns here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. They all happen to be shawls, whether rectangular or triangular, colorful or monochrome, textured or lacey. Judy knit this “Wiggle Wrap” with two contrasting colorways of the self-striping Kauni Effektgarn. One ball subtly shifted from … [more]

knit.wear.

Remember knit.wear, the stylish, short-lived magazine from Interweave that was replaced by knit.purl? Well, looks like it’s back, at least for this one special issue! Knit.wear focuses on simplicity and sophistication in handknitting, is typically garment-focused, with more sweaters than accessories, and this issue is no exception. Shibui yarns are well-represented in this issue; the striped … [more]

New colors in Cutthroat Yarn Gradient Cotton.

A new batch of colors in Cutthroat Yarn Gradient Cotton now graces our shelves. Cutthroat Yarn’s Gradients have been warmly welcomed by knitters at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, who are snapping them up for lightweight spring and summer shawls, the likes of “Spearmint Tea,” “Everyday Shawl,” and “Wildheart,” to name a few. When we heard requests for more blues, … [more]

Back in stock: Binkwaffle bags.

Our supply of Binkwaffle bags had dwindled to just two lonesome bags when we got a package from Holly at Binkwaffle and breathed a sigh of relief. We have sold out and reordered again and again since we first brought Binkwaffle’s reversible dumpling bags into the shop. Their clever design, colorful prints, and just-right size have … [more]

The Acadia Collection.

We just got a new pattern collection from Kelbourne Woolens, designers and distributors of Fibre Company yarns. This group is named for the yarn it features, a yarn that has become a classic in the few years we’ve stocked it: meet the Acadia Collection. Fibre Company Acadia is a dk weight yarn made of merino wool, … [more]

Happy to report that our shelves are once again full of yarn bowls and ceramic buttons from Late Bloomer Pottery! Frumet is a local potter who makes beautiful functional pieces here in the Triangle. Her yarn bowls are a little different each time, varying the color, texture, and shape of the cut-outs. Yarn bowls are designed to … [more]

Show and tell: neckwear.

Along with daydreaming about future projects, trying new techniques, and deciding between colors, show-and-tell is one of the predominant activities here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. Now and then, I like to bring this activity to the blog, sharing finished projects that started their lives as yarns on our shelves. Today, let’s look at cowls … [more]
