Pom Pom Quarterly: Fall 2016.

The Fall 2016 issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is here! This issue is devoted to natural dyes, featuring garments knit in naturally dyed yarn along with articles and tutorials on natural dyeing. The knitting patterns in this issue are the tantalizing stuff of autumn: cozy sweaters, mittens, hats, shawls, and other cold-weather garments we can’t … [more]

Back in stock: Malabrigo.

Two enormous boxes of Malabrigo yarn arrived at the shop last week, big enough to fill the table in the classroom. I cut open those behemoths and sorted the yarn by type, stacking colorful bags of Rios, Arroyo, Sock, and Mechita. Before tucking them away in storage, I pulled one skein of each new color … [more]

Back in stock: Shibui Staccato.

Our stash of Shibui Staccato had dwindled to a dangerously low number of skeins when – thank goodness! – our order arrived last week. Staccato is a lustrous blend of 70% superwash merino and 30% silk in a fingering weight. Like Cima, it has a nice high twist, giving it the look of a string … [more]

Back in stock: UKI Supreme weaving yarns.

It’s been about a year and a half since we placed our first order with UKI Supreme Corporation, a North Carolina company well known for its cotton weaving yarns. We’ve met more and more weavers in that time, and so, our selection of colors and weights of yarn has grown. We carry Supreme’s mercerized cotton yarn … [more]

Anne’s gifts-in-progress.

“What are you working on?” is knitters’ small talk, a question Anne and I encounter and ask many times a day here at the shop. Today, we’ll pose the question to Anne herself, taking a rare peek in her personal knitting bag. Just how much does a large Binkwaffle dumpling bag hold? If you pack … [more]

Nine years and counting.

Once again, we’ve won “Best Yarn Shop” in the News of Orange County’s Reader’s Choice Awards. We’re so proud to have nine years’ worth of “Best Yarn Shop” awards hanging in our window! Thanks so much to all who voted, and to everyone who supports the shop!

New from Binkwaffle.

HYS regulars know the drill: Binkwaffle bags come and go from our shelves frequently. We order a bundle of these reversible dumpling bags at a time, and they’re snapped up again and again by knitters and crocheters seeking whimsical, functional project bags. Our most recent order included a variety of small and large Binkwaffle bags … [more]

Cable Left, Cable Right, and other books.

Not long ago, we placed a big book order from our new distributor, restocking many of our favorite reference books and bringing in a brand new title, too: Judith Durant’s Cable Left, Cable Right.  Cable Left, Cable Right is a compendium of cables, with detailed instructions on how to execute them. It’s a technique book as well … [more]

Interweave Knits.

The 20th Anniversary issue of Interweave Knits is here! This Fall 2016 issue is packed with cozy sweaters, and many of them are knit in yarns we carry here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. The colorwork sweater below was knit in one of my personal favorites, Swans Island All American Sport. Not only is the … [more]

Slope.

We’re pleased to announce the arrival of a new knit sample here at the shop, and a new monthly feature, to boot: here’s “Slope,” knit in Shibui Dune, our inaugural Shibui Sample of the Month! Last year, Anne knit her own “Slope,” a curved-hem tank in the lightweight Shibui Twig. Most of the time it lives … [more]
