This introductory class will explore 2-color stranded knitting in the round using “Aal Ower Toorie,” the featured pattern for Shetland Wool Week 2025. Nancy will teach the basics of stranded colorwork, including how to trap floats in the back of the work. Bring your needles and yarn to the first class – we will begin by practicing colorwork together!

Experience: Students should be comfortable with casting on and knitting in the round.

Materials:

• Pattern: “Aal Ower Toorie,” by Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers, available to purchase from Shetland Wool Week
• Yarn: Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift in 5 or 8 colors; we have kits available in 3 different colorways, or come by the shop to pick your own!
• Needles for working in the round using the method you prefer; double points, 2 circular needles, Magic Loop, or 16″ circular needle will all work. You’ll need a smaller size for the ribbing and a larger size for the colorwork, depending on the size hat you make:
  • Small, to fit 18.75″ head: 2.25mm and 2.75mm
  • Medium, to fit 20.5″ head: 2.5mm and 3.00mm
  • Large, to fit 22″ head: 2.75mm and 3.25mm
• Notions: stitch marker, tapestry needle

Make a spring tee with Nancy! Lene Holme Samsoe’s “Musling Tee” combines lace and texture for a lightweight warm weather garment knitted in the round. This class will focus on top-down seamless garment construction and modifications to get the right fit. We will also practice chart reading and German short rows. Our first step will be swatching in the round for accurate gauge measurement – join the class for camaraderie and guidance as you knit!

Experience: Students should be comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, and working in the round.

Materials needed:

• Yarn: 726 – 1210 yards worsted weight – see pattern for detailed size/yardage info
  • we recommend Retrosaria Rosa Pomar Mungo or Sandnes Garn Line, but have lots to choose from – give yourself plenty of time to select materials before the first class meeting!

  • US 2.5 (3mm) and US 6 (4mm) circular needles, 16″ and 32″
  • US 2.5 (3mm) and US 6 (4mm) double pointed needles. If using magic loop, you do not need double pointed needles.

This class is for all the knitters who say they only know the knit and purl stitches! Build your skills as you knit the “Wildflower” headband, by Natxa Gonzalez. This tiny project boasts loads of techniques that appear in many patterns and open up a world of possibilities. Anne will teach the following:

• center double decrease (CDD)
• right- and left-leaning increases (m1r, m1l)
• slip slip knit (ssk)
• knit two together (k2tog)
• eyelets (yo)
• I-cord

Experience: Students should be comfortable casting on, knitting and purling.

Materials:

• Pattern: “Wildflower” headband, by Natxa Gonzalez – available as a free download on Ravelry
• Yarn: Sport weight cotton, 35 – 45 yds for one headband

Learn to knit socks with a simple free pattern, “Rye Light,” by Tin Can Knits. “Rye Light” is knit from the cuff down on double pointed needles and features a simple rib, garter stitch and stockinette leg, and heel flap. In the first class, Anne will guide students through pattern reading, sock construction, and casting on; homework will be to knit through completion of the heel flap. The second class will cover the heel and gusset; completing the foot will be the homework. The final class will cover the decreases and kitchener stitch that close the toe.

Experience: Students should be comfortable knitting and purling; knitting in the round is helpful. Students should plan to complete homework (knitting) between classes.

Materials:

• “Rye Light,” by Tin Can Knits – available as a free download from Ravelry
• Fingering weight sock yarn, 120-480 yards depending on what size you choose. The pattern has multiple sizes ranging from baby to large adult; reference the pattern for detailed yardage info.
• Double pointed needles in US size 1 (2.25mm) and 2 (2.75mm)
• Notions: one stitch marker, tapestry needle for kitchener stitching the toe.

Description: Ready for a spring crochet shawl? Join Katherine’s class and pick a crochet
design for your spring shawl project. Choose between “Crochet CLEO Shawl” and “Estrid Shawl,” two beginner-friendly patterns that are made with DK weight yarn. Click the links above to read more and purchase the pattern of your choice.

Experience: Students should be comfortable with chaining, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, and reading a basic crochet pattern. Class will cover the additional stitches used in the patterns, edging, and blocking instructions.

Join Katherine’s class to knit this beautiful top-down, half-circle shaped shawl. The
design includes stripes, slipped stitches, a small brioche-tuck section (which can be ribbed if you prefer), and a knitted-on border.

Experience: Students should be comfortable with knitting, purling, casting-on, and casting-off. Class will cover carrying yarn for stripes, slip stitches, the basic brioche-tuck stitch used in the pattern, the knit-on border technique, and blocking instructions.

Materials needed:

• Pattern: “Sundial Shawl,” by Monika Anna – available to purchase on Ravelry
• Yarn: DK or worsted weight yarn in 2 colors – we recommend Malabrigo Rios
  • 440 yards of Color A and 225 yards of Color B

Join Katherine’s class to knit a top-down colorwork pullover! Choose from fingering weight “saskie” or DK weight “floe jumper,” both designed by thepetiteknitter, knit in the round with seamless construction and an engaging colorwork yoke. Both patterns come in ten adult sizes with customization options for both body length and sleeve length.

Class will cover optional modification to the ribbing, optional short rows to improve shoulder shaping, adjusting fit of sleeves, and blocking.

Join Anne to knit “Lento,” a simple pullover designed by Jonna Helin. Over four sessions, we will take time to review the pattern, knit and measure swatches to determine gauge, and make ourselves a timeless sweater.

“Lento” is knit seamlessly in the round from the top down. After a provisional cast on at the neckline, the yoke is shaped with short rows and raglan increases, and the body and sleeves are then worked in the round. The class takes place over several months to allow time for knitting between sessions, so your “Lento” will be ready for fall wearing!

Experience: Knitters should be comfortable casting on, and counting stitches and rows. Some knitting in the round experience would be helpful, but is not required as we will knit our gauge in the round.

Materials needed:

• Pattern: “Lento,” by Jonna Helin – available for purchase on Ravelry
  • Sizes available: 38.5 (42.75, 45.25, 48, 50.75) (55.5, 59.75, 63.5, 67.25)” chest circumference

  • The “Lento” hanging in the shop was worked holding Malabrigo Ultimate Sock with Isager Boucle, giving the sweater a lightweight fluffy texture. For her own sweater, Anne is planning to hold Brooklyn Tweed Imbue Worsted with Hand Maiden Superkid Silk for a thicker fabric. Come by the shop before the first class meeting, we’re happy to show you around and talk through the options!
• Needles:
  • US 6 (4mm) for ribbing, US 10 (6mm) for stockinette stitch, and an extra circular needle for the provisional cast on at the neckline
  • 4mm crochet hook for provisional cast on at the neckline
  • During the first class meeting, we’ll swatch using the larger needles aiming for a gauge, after blocking, of 15 sts x 21 rows to 4” in stockinette. Bring whatever needles you like for working a small circumference in the round – a set of double points or a long circular needle for magic loop
