Knit your Rhinebeck sweater with Nancy! Every year, Andrea Mowry designs a sweater especially to wear to the NY Sheep and Wool Festival in October. This year’s pattern is “Antipodes,” a cozy crew neck pullover with interesting saddle shoulder construction, stripes, stranded colorwork, and faux center seams a la “The Weekender.” This seamless sweater is worked from the top down, beginning with the saddle shoulders. Once the yoke is completed, you’ll join to work the body in the round. Then sleeves are picked up from the armhole openings and worked in the round. Nancy will teach colorwork techniques and sweater construction, focusing on fit and finishing rather than teaching basic knitting skills.
Experience: Students should be comfortable knitting in the round and have successfully completed at least one hat or sweater using stranded colorwork. Students should know how to knit and purl, work basic increases and decreases (k2tog, ssk, M1), and be comfortable reading knitting patterns and charts.
Materials needed:
- Pattern: “Antipodes,” by Andrea Mowry, available as a Ravelry In-Store Pattern sale here at the shop.
- Yarn: fingering weight wool in 2 shades, one solid and one self-striping or variegated. For the solid shade (MC), we recommend Kelbourne Woolens Camper, Cascade 220 Fingering, BC Garn Bio Balance, or Isager Merilin. For the self-striping/variegated (CC), we recommend Schoppel-Wolle Crazy Zauberball. Please see pattern for specific sizes and yardage, and allow extra yardage for a large swatch. Be sure to select your yarn and colors well in advance of class so we can be sure to have the quantity you need! We will cast on and begin knitting our swatches in the first class.
- Needles: please bring a US 4 (or the recommended size to get gauge for your yarn) circular needle either 16 inches long or 32/40” long (for knitting the swatch using magic loop). Once you’ve determined your gauge, you’ll need the following:
- Main Fabric: US 4/3.5 mm – 32-40”/80-100 cm circular and preferred needles for small circumference knitting (Magic Loop or Double Pointed Needles), plus a spare needle for binding off the underarms.
- Ribbing: US 2/2.75 mm – 32-40”/80-100 cm circular and preferred needles for small circumference knitting.
- Notions: stitch markers, cable needle, tapestry needle, row counter (highly recommended), Barber Cords style stitch holder or spare circular needle for provisional cast on, stitch holders or waste yarn
