The Early Spring 2016 issue features knitting and crochet patterns for this transitional season: tunics, wraps, tanks, lace cardigans, and lightweight pullovers.

Yoko Hatta’s “Eyelet Top” is knit in Fibre Company Meadow, a soft and tweedy blend of 40% merino wool, 25% baby llama, 20% silk, and 15% linen that falls somewhere between lace and fingering weight. It’s often used for shawl-knitting, but makes an equally good sweater yarn, as Anne can attest; she’s currently working on a “Featherweight Cardigan” in Meadow.

Also in this issue of Vogue, designer Deborah Newton shares tips on how to measure oneself for fit, an essential step in creating a well-fitting garment. Come by the shop to pick up a copy of Vogue Knitting and browse the rest of the latest magazines!

The Winter 2015/16 issue of Vogue Knitting is here!

DSCN5421

The Swedish Bohus knitting tradition is one thread that runs through this issue, popping up in articles and patterns alike.

DSCN5423

Founded by designer Emma Jacobsson in the late 1930’s, Bohus Stickning designed luxurious handknit garments into the late 1960’s. Those garments were knit by women in Bohuslän, Sweden, and marketed to a wealthy international audience, creating a distinctive colorwork style along the way. Read more about Bohus in this issue of Vogue.

Handwoven and Vogue Knitting.

Two new magazines recently arrived, filled with inspiration for weavers and knitters.

DSCN5125

The November/December issue of Handwoven Magazine focuses on overshot techniques and summer and winter weave patterns.

DSCN5126 DSCN5127

The Holiday 2015 issue of Vogue Knitting is full of festive, elegant knits.

This issue sparkles with beaded patterns, from shawls to gloves to sweaters. Laura Nelkin’s article introduces a variety of ways to add beads to knitted fabric, highlighting patterns from this issue that use those techniques.

Vogue Knitting and Interweave Knits Gifts.

Two more new knitting magazines have found their way to the shop, packed with ideas for fall stitching!

DSCN4903

This issue of Vogue Knitting is anchored by two spreads of color-themed pattern collections, one all in teal, and another all in black and white.

I also spotted a feature on double knitting, a technique that creates two layers of fabric at once, making a cozy, reversible piece. This “Semicircular Double-Knit Shawl” is made in three shades of Fibre Company Canopy Fingering, a lovely yarn we just welcomed to the shop this month.

DSCN4905

Interweave Knits Gifts is an annual special issue full of knitted gift ideas, Interweave’s yearly reminder to start working on holiday gifts before it’s too late.

DSCN5033

You’ll find a wider variety of patterns in this issue than most, going beyond garments and accessories to include home goods, decorations, and things for children.

DSCN5035

Some of these patterns are aimed at last-minute gift-knitters, or those with long lists of handknit-worthy recipients, who know the value of a beautiful gift that works up quickly. To that end, I noticed two familiar yarns from our Super-Bulky Weight department put to good use in this issue. The “Alpaca Poncho” below is made in Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande, and the “Orchid Scarf” calls for Berroco Peruvia Quick.

Vogue Knitting.

The Early Fall 2015 issue of Vogue Knitting has arrived here at the shop, right in the middle of a heat wave that makes “Early Fall” seem particularly far away.

DSCN4689

This issue has plenty of patterns to fuel your cold-weather knitting fantasies: cabled cowls and mitts, classic colorwork, textured sweaters, and a collection of cardigans from independent knitwear designers, the likes of Veera Välimäki and Amy Christoffers.

DSCN4691

Amy Christoffers’ design is a cardigan knit in Berroco Maya, a cotton and alpaca blend chainette yarn, lightweight enough to pull on in chilly air-conditioning during the warmer months.

DSCN4692

There’s some good reading material in this issue, too. Meg Swansen’s column shows how to do a continuous border on a cardigan, and another article offers tips for faster knitting.

The Spring/Summer 2015 issue of Vogue Knitting is here!

DSCN4331

This issue features an article on sizing oversized sweaters, helping to make sense of positive ease.

DSCN4333

Meg Swansen’s column is all about decreases, and choosing the best kind for the project at hand.

DSCN4332

Besides the articles, there are plenty of patterns: a spread of sporty stripes, colorful tees and tunics, and plenty of those oversized sweaters I mentioned earlier. The colorblock sweater below is knit in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, a worsted weight blend of cotton and wool.

This colorwork jacket was knit in Fibre Company Savannah, a sport weight blend of plant and animal fibers that is perfect for Spring stitching.

DSCN4025

This issue features a great article on Barbara Walker, author of the amazing four volume Treasury of Knitting Patterns published by Schoolhouse Press.

DSCN4027

As a nod to Walker, many of the patterns in this issue include two-color mosaic motifs, a genre of stitch patterns to which she has contributed tremendously.

DSCN4028

Mosaic knitting is created by slipping some stitches and knitting others, working with just one color on any given row.

DSCN4030

Meg Swansen’s Vogue column covers increases this time around, the how, when, and why of them.

Vogue Knitting and Interweave Crochet Home.

The winter magazines are still pouring in, and the two latest are Vogue Knitting and Interweave Crochet Home.

DSCN3805

Vogue Knitting features patterns for cold-weather garments and accessories, along with a brioche lace tutorial from Nancy Marchant.

DSCN3808 DSCN3806

I always like to see what Meg Swansen’s Vogue column covers; this issue, it’s provisional cast-ons, a handy technique.

DSCN3809

DSCN3832

Interweave Crochet Home is a special issue on crocheted home accessories, from blankets and pillows to coasters, placemats, baskets, and more.

DSCN3833 DSCN3834

Knitting and crochet make very different fabrics, and in many cases, I think crochet is particularly well-suited to home goods. It can be sturdy and structural–essential for something like a rug–and tends to go somewhat faster than knitting, making a big project like blankets or curtains less daunting.

Meg Swansen’s column discusses the process of updating Elizabeth Zimmermann’s classic Knitting Workshop, a beloved book that will always have a home on our shelves here at the shop as well as in my home library.

The Early Fall issue of Vogue Knitting is here!

DSCN3186

The Early Fall issue is early, indeed, arriving as it does in mid-Summer. That makes it a perfect diversion for hot days, however, a reminder that one day, cool weather will come again. We’ll knit in anticipation.

DSCN3187

In this issue, Deborah Newton talks pockets, and plenty of patterns await your eager needles, from fine-gauge sweaters to neckties to inventive openwork.
