Northern Lights: a Collection with Brooklyn Tweed and Amirisu.

A new book has arrived to inspire your knitting this year and beyond – let’s look inside Northern Lights ($28), a collaboration between Brooklyn Tweed + Amirisu!

For Northern Lights, designers from around the world developed patterns for Brooklyn Tweed’s breed-specific American wool yarns.

“Solstice,” by Kirsten Joel, knit with Brooklyn Tweed Quarry.

“Dyad,” by Thien Kieu-Lam, knit with Brooklyn Tweed Arbor.

Fiona Alice, Sari Nordlund, Alice Caetano, and others contributed garments and accessories inspired by Finnish designers and architects.

“Gyration,” by Keiko Kikuno, knit with Brooklyn Tweed Shelter.

“Alvar,” by Dario Tubiana – RossoCardinale, knit with Brooklyn Tweed Tones.

“Welle,” by Ayako Kataoka, knit with Brooklyn Tweed Arbor.

We are proud to carry every single Brooklyn Tweed yarn featured in this book, and we keep a generous supply on hand in a wide range of colors. We even have a decent (but dwindling) supply of the sadly discontinued Peerie!

Northern Lights also includes an in-depth interview with Brooklyn Tweed co-owner and founder Jared Flood, covering his personal and professional histories with knitting.

Hello, Sandnes Garn Double Sunday!

We’re excited to have another yarn from Norwegian yarn company Sandnes Garn on our shelves: meet Double Sunday!

Sandnes Garn Double Sunday:

  • DK weight
  • 100% merino wool
  • 118 yards/50g
  • $11 each

This springy merino is a thicker version of Sandnes Garn Sunday, and so named because two strands of Sunday knit up at the same gauge as one Double Sunday.

What to knit with Double Sunday? Here are some ideas!

I’ve already swatched and cast on for a PetiteKnit “Sille Slipover” using Double Sunday in black, and I’m thoroughly enjoying this plush yarn, and appreciating the stitch definition.

Amirisu is a knitting magazine based in Japan, each issue filled with articles, interviews, and patterns from designers all over the world.

 

This issue features designs by Veera Valimaki, Emily Greene, Fiona Alice, General Hogbuffer, Sari Nordlund, and more.

I spotted two designs in familiar yarns: a lace shawl in Brooklyn Tweed Dapple, a perfectly balanced merino/cotton blend, and a stunning dress in Isager Silk Mohair.

A new issue of Amirisu is here!

Amirisu is a knitting magazine based in Japan, each issue filled with articles, interviews, and patterns from designers all over the world.

Rosemary Hill, Dianna Walla, Sari Nordlund, Yamagara, and others have contributed to this issue, designing garments and accessories inspired by inheritance – important places or things passed down culturally or within their families.

 

I spotted some familiar fibers in this issue – colorwork sweaters in Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Shelter, a unique brioche shawl vest in Isager Highland Wool, and a richly textured cowl in Brooklyn Tweed Peerie.

Amirisu often includes tutorials and essays on crafts other than knitting, and this issue has a quilted tote, a profile of a ceramics artist, and a crafter’s travel guide to Toronto.

Pom Pom Quarterly: 10th Anniversary issue!

The 10th Anniversary issue of Pom Pom Quarterly has arrived here at the shop!

This unique new issue has a flip double cover, and the patterns within are divided between warm and cool weather garments and accessories.

PPQ has also switched to a larger format and increased the number of pages, so photos are bigger and instructions are easier to read.

Issue 41 features patterns by James N Watts, Sylvia Watts-Cherry, Dawn Henderson, Sari Nordlund, and more.

I love seeing almost every garment knit in multiple colorways, and shown on a few different models – it gives a sense of the enormous possibility that exists in each design.

As ever, there’s good reading material in this issue, too – an essay about cultural appropriate and Sashiko by Atsushi Futatsuya, a crafter’s guide to London, where Pom Pom was founded, and a thoughtful guide to yarn substitution.

Helga Isager, Veronik Avery, Dianna Walla, Sari Nordlund, Paula Pereira and others have contributed to this issue, designing garments and accessories inspired by their favorite films.

I spotted some familiar fibers in this issue – a marled pullover in Isager Spinni and Silk Mohair, a twisted stitch cardigan in Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, and another in Shelter, though Tones would make a lovely substitute.

Amirisu often includes crafts other than knitting, and this issue has a machine quilting tutorial.

Silk Mohair + Quarry.

Isager Silk Mohair is the newest yarn here at our shop, a fine and fluffy yarn that plays well with others. We are particularly enthused about pairing it with Brooklyn Tweed Quarry, a woolen spun yarn found in our bulky weight section. Silk Mohair brings softness and a fuzzy halo to Quarry, which is lofty and structured, ideal for a cozy winter sweater.

Anne knit up a simple hat with this alluring combination, following Earth Guild’s “Super Simple Circular Hat Calculator.”

  • Isager Silk Mohair: lace weight, 70% kid mohair, 30% silk, 233 yards/25 g, $16 each
  • Brooklyn Tweed Quarry: bulky weight, 100% Targhee-Columbia wool, 200 yards/100 g, $25 each

One skein of each will make a hat like Anne’s; here are some more pattern ideas for this yarn pairing!

Dream in Color Pop-Up Club: October 2021.

Dream in Color’s Pop Up Club is back! Every month, we’re getting a special new colorway from Dream in Color, a Tucson-based producer of small batch hand-dyed yarns. October’s new limited edition colorway is here while supplies last!

Dream in Color Smooshy Cashmere:

  • fingering weight
  • 70% superwash merino, 20% cashmere, 10% nylon
  • 400 yards/100g
  • $34 each

October’s skeins are a riot of color, a mix of pastels and deep, saturated tones – purple, orange, pink, seafoam, yellow, and more. To my eye, these colors play well with solids in Shibui Silk Cloud, a super soft lace weight mohair/silk blend.

How to combine them? You could work stripes to let the variegated Smooshy Cashmere shine against the contrasting Silk Cloud – check out “Birds of a Feather,” by Andrea Mowry. This asymmetrical triangular shawl would requires 2 skeins Smooshy Cashmere and 2 Silk Cloud ($124 total).

Or – you could hold them together, for a more blended, toned-down effect. Try the “Iris hat,” by Sari Nordlund, a ribbed beanie that requires 1 skein Smooshy Cashmere and 1 Silk Cloud ($62 total).
