Anniversary party and sale!

As you may remember from years past, or may have seen in our most recent email newsletter, this October marks the 11 year anniversary of the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. The shop has grown and changed since Anne first opened in 2006, but always with the goal of bringing the best natural fiber yarns, tools, publications, and classes to stitchers in the Triangle. By that measure, in my opinion, Anne has succeeded tremendously, and I am so proud to be on her team, spending my days in this special shop.

We’re celebrating with two events this year. First, we’re staying open late for an Anniversary Party on Wednesday, October 18th, the exact date on which Anne opened the shop 11 years ago. Join us from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for festive snacks and drinks, and enter a raffle for a chance to win a gift certificate to the shop. You can get a raffle ticket by wearing something you made with yarn from HYS, or by making a purchase during the party. And yes, we’ll give you two raffle tickets if you do both!

Second, but no less exciting, we always celebrate our anniversary with a sale, and this year is no exception; on Saturday and Sunday, October 21st and 22nd, everything in the shop will be 15% off, with the exception of classes and that which is already discounted. This is the time to treat yourself to some exciting new yarns, splurge on a beautiful book, and save on that big project you’ve been wanting to start this fall.

We hope to see you at the party Wednesday evening, and at the sale Saturday and Sunday! We are so grateful to all of you for your support over the years, for shopping and learning and sharing with us. Come by the shop and let us thank you in person!

We’re quickly coming up on the end of the month, and with it, the end of our Annual Inventory Sale. With that in mind, let today’s blog post be a quick reminder to come into the shop before the sale ends!

Everything in the shop is 15% off for just a few more days–every skein of yarn, every pair of needles, every hook, every book, every magazine, pattern, knitterly gadget, project bag; all of it is discounted. If you’ve been meaning to come by to take advantage of the sale but let the month get away from you, hurry in before the end of the day on Sunday, July 30th. See you there!

Annual Inventory Sale!

As many of you know, July is our annual inventory sale month.

From July 5th to the 31st, everything in the shop is discounted by 15%, with the exception of classes and yarns that have already been discounted. If you’ve had your eye on a special skein, or have been planning a big project or two, now is the time to take the leap!

Pick up a Cocoknits Knitter’s Block, stock up on your favorite needles and hooks, treat yourself to a special book or magazine, or snag some Brooklyn Tweed yarns and patterns at the sale price. Have you tried Fibre Company Arranmore, treated yourself to a Harmony Farm Candle, or succumbed to the appeal of a “Crete” wrap from Shibui? Give yourself permission, it’s on sale.

Whatever it is you’ve been wanting, come by the shop during the month of July to get 15% off your purchase! We’ll be closed on July 4th for the holiday, but are otherwise open at our regular business hours.

Mirasol Tupa: now on sale!

Another discontinued yarn has moved to the Sale Trunk here at the shop: Mirasol Tupa. It’s a lovely yarn, but since it’s no longer manufactured, we’re now offering it at a deep discount of 20% off the original price!

Tupa is a DK weight blend of merino and silk, a soft and shiny yarn in bright colors. Knitted fabric in Tupa has a nice mix of bounce and drape, making it ideal for scarves, cowls, shawls, mitts, and hats. We still have sweater quantities, too – look for pattern ideas on our “DK weight” Pinterest board!

Though we’re sad to see good yarns go, we love sharing them with you at a discounted price. Come by to pick up some Tupa at a great price before it disappears!

We always celebrate our anniversary with a sale, and this year is no exception; from Friday, October 14th – Sunday, October 16th, everything in the shop will be 15% off, with the exception of classes and that which is already discounted. This is the time to treat yourself to some exciting new yarns, and save on that big project you’ve been wanting to start this fall.

We’re doing something special this year, too, because an anniversary like this deserves a party. On Friday, October 14th, we’re having a party at the shop from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Join us for food, drink, and the launch of an exciting new product we’ve been planning for just this happy occasion. We hope to see you Friday evening!

Book Raffle!

One of our big goals at market this year was to find a new book distributor, as the one we’d long relied on went out of business earlier in the year. I’m happy to report that we did find a lovely new source for books, and they were kind enough to send us home from market with something special: five brand new knitting books, each signed by their authors.

To celebrate our new book distributor, we’re having a raffle, and giving away these signed copies as prizes. For each book you purchase during our Annual Inventory Sale this July, you’ll receive a raffle ticket, an entry to win a signed copy of one of the following books:

Going-to-Market Sale spotlight: Schulana Sojabama.

From May 10th – June 5th, we have Colinette and Schulana yarns discounted during our Going-to-Market Sale: single skeins are 30% off, or 40% off when you buy 10 or more! Throughout the sale, I’ll be highlighting some of these yarns and giving ideas for what to make with them. Today: spotlight on Schulana Sojabama.

Schulana Sojabama is a dk weight blend of 55% bamboo and 45% soy, with 120 yards on each 50 gram ball. These smooth, silky plant fibers have maximum drape, making Sojabama perfect for lightweight scarves, shawls, and loose-fitting summer sweaters.

Looking through projects on Ravelry using Sojabama, I spotted a few “Summer Flies” shawls and the lovely lace “Gridwork” scarf. The natural drape of this yarn makes it ideal for the “Drop Stitch Scarf,” as well, or cast on extra stitches for a wider piece and make a drop stitch shawl.

For larger garments, consider Amy Herzog’s “Bryony,” Purl Soho’s “Silken Straw Summer Sweater,” or Shellie Anderson’s “Nova,” “Meridian,” and “Interval.” Sojabama is the right gauge for an “Easy Folded Poncho,” and would make a lovely summer version of that timeless pattern, perfect for covering up in chilly air-conditioned spaces.

Going-to-Market Sale spotlight: Colinette Jitterbug.

Jitterbug has been a well-loved yarn here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, and I expect it to be one of the first to sell out during our Going-to-Market Sale. This fingering weight superwash merino is tightly-plied, making it sturdy enough for socks, but soft enough for shawls or baby things. It’s on the robust end of fingering weight, so it still makes a substantial fabric at a larger gauge; knit it tightly for hard-wearing socks or mittens, or go up a few needle sizes for a softly draping fabric.

Consider Elizabeth Zimmermann’s classic “Baby Surprise Jacket,” Martina Behm’s “Hitchiker,” or the “Simple Sock Pattern” that comes printed on the Jitterbug label. Look for more pattern ideas on our “Fingering weight” Pinterest board!
