Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide No. 25: Botanica.

The twenty fifth installment of the Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide series is here!

MDK’s series of Field Guides are pocket-sized booklets focused on a particular theme, knitting technique, or designer. This newest Field Guide features designs by Dee Hardwicke – let’s take a look inside!

Dee Hardwicke is an artist and designer who works in multiple media, including chinaware, mosaics, stationery, and knitting. No matter the mode or material, Hardwicke’s work is colorful, and reflects her great love of the British landscape.

All of these patterns all call for MDK’s own yarn, which we don’t have on our shelves, but Brooklyn Tweed Arbor is a lovely substitute, and we have dozens of colors!

We still have a few copies of Hardwicke’s gorgeous book The Knitted Fabric, published last winter by Laine – pick it up if this Field Guide whets your appetite!

MDK Field Guides are $15.95 eachorder online for local pickup or shipping, or come by to shop in person – we’re open from 11am – 5:30 pm, Tuesdays – Saturdays!

The Knitted Fabric, by Dee Hardwicke.

Another gorgeous book from Laine! Let’s look inside The Knitted Fabric, by Dee Hardwicke ($50).

Dee Hardwicke is an artist and designer who works in multiple media, including chinaware, mosaics, stationery, and knitting. No matter the mode or material, Hardwicke’s work is colorful, and reflects her great love of the British landscape.

The Knitted Fabric is a collection of colorwork projects for you and your home, a mix of garments and accessories, pillows and blankets.

Throughout the collection, Hardwicke shares the process and practice of design, the paintings and sketches and iterations that became the patterns in the book.

She invites readers and knitters to customize these colorwork designs as well, to enjoy the patterns by playing with different colors and motifs, as well as scale.

Swing by the shop to pick up a copy of The Knitted Fabric, and browse all our other books and magazines – inspiring publications like these make lovely gifts for knitters, especially with a Hillsborough Yarn Shop gift certificate tucked inside!

Laine Magazine, No. 12.

The newest issue of Laine Magazine is here!

Laine Magazine is a publication out of Finland, a knitting and lifestyle magazine with a love of natural fibers as its focus, and a reputation for beautiful designs and tantalizing photography.

Issue 12 features patterns from an amazing group of designers, the likes of Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Kristin Drysdale, Tamy Gore, Jeanette Sloan, and more.

I spotted a few familiar yarns among these designs, the kind of rustic wool that Anne and I have such a soft spot for – here’s the toothy Isager Jensen in a dramatic cable and drop stitch yoke by Olga Buraya-Kefelian, followed by Kristin Drysdale’s colorwork pullover in Tukuwool Fingering.

We love super soft fibers, too, of course – how about Shibui Haven, a merino/cashmere blend? Dee Hardwicke has put it to use in a colorwork cowl and mitt set, below.

Laine No. 12 is $30 each – come by the shop or order online for local pickup or shipping! We also have Laine No. 8, No. 10, and No. 11 in stock, and Laine’s most recent books, Fair Isle Weekend, Strands of Joy, 52 Weeks of Shawls, and 52 Weeks of Socks – now in paperback. See you at the shop!
