Sporty + Arroyo + The Shift.

Ewe Ewe Sporty is back in stock! This sport weight superwash merino has been popular lately, especially for Heather Walpole’s free “Temperature Tee,” so we’re pleased to have refreshed our supply.

Sporty is a good fit for Andrea Mowry’s “The Shift,” a cousin of her popular “Nightshift” shawl. “The Shift” is smaller in gauge and in scale, and while it looks like a triangular shawl wrapped around the neck, it’s actually a cowl, which many find easier to wear. You’ll need 200 yards each in three colors, and while there are plenty of tempting combinations in Sporty, I couldn’t resist adding some Malabrigo Arroyo to the mix. These two yarns match in terms of gauge and fiber content, and they bring out the best in one another – here are a few color combinations for “The Shift” cowl!

Koigu Collector’s Club: Barn Art.

The Koigu Collector’s Club continues! Each month, we’ll receive 21 skeins of KPPPM in a limited edition color dyed especially for a select group of local yarn stores that carry Koigu.

Our most recent shipment from Koigu is Barn Art, a playful variegated colorway. These special skeins are predominantly pale gray, beige, and ivory, streaked and spotted with whimsical brights. Pops of purple, aqua, pink, yellow, blue, and green make for lively skeins up close, though from a distance they read as almost neutral.

Unpacking them, my mind went right back to the design work of Tamy Gore, whose Ravelry page radiates multicolored shawl inspiration. “Ashbrook” caught my eye and captured my imagination, so I’ve created color combinations with that particular pattern in mind.

Here, Koigu KPPPM is paired with Marion Foale 3 ply Wool, a smooth superwash wool that comes in sophisticated solid colors. For “Ashbrook,” you’ll need 2 of each, and that gives you enough yardage to assign the colors any way you like – Gore uses slightly more of color 2 than colors 1 or 3, so put your favorite in that C2 spot!

Tweed Silk Cloud + Verve!

For as long as we’ve stocked Shibui yarns here at the shop, we’ve been admirers of Shellie Anderson’s designs. She was an in-house designer Shibui for some years and still loves to work with their yarns, creating garments that look simple, but feature thoughtful details to “challenge and delight the knitter,” in her words.

“Verve” is one such design, a lightweight colorblock top knit with Shibui Tweed Silk Cloud. The loose-fitting tee is knit all in stockinette stitch, showing off this luxurious lace weight yarn in five or six colors.

  • Sizes: A (B, C, D, E)
  • Finished dimensions: 46 (52, 58, 64, 68)″ bust circumference

I put together three colorways for “Verve,” the first of which is based on Anderson’s own sample version. Each colorway is shown in two variations – one with five colors, for sizes A-C, and one with six colors, for sizes D-E. I named them with the word “verve” itself in mind, conjuring the enthusiasm and boldness it suggests.

 

Each 25 gram skein of Tweed Silk Cloud has 191 yards, and is composed of 65% silk and 35% mohair. Skeins are $23 each, or $25 for special Julie Hoover colors.

Sale of the Week: Shibui Vine and Silk Cloud!

We’ve decided to keep our doors closed through the month of June, though we’re still virtually open for online orders. As we have done throughout April and May, we’ll have a special sale each week – 15% off a featured yarn, our Sale of the Week!

We have two yarns on sale this week – Shibui Vine and Silk Cloud are 15% off from June 15 – 20!

Vine is a unique combination of 41% paper, 31% cotton, and 28% silk. The texture is notable, too – a flat yarn wrapped in lustrous, overlapping threads.

Silk Cloud is a lace weight blend of 60% mohair and 40% silk, a fuzzy and luminous yarn.

 

They’re very different, Vine and Silk Cloud, but together they make an incredible fabric: Vine is cool to the touch and brings elegant drape, and Silk Cloud brings unmatched softness.

“Torrent” is a textured triangular shawlette knit on the bias, holding Vine and Silk Cloud together. The pattern is available for free when you buy Vine and Silk Cloud here at our shop.

The “Torrent” below was made by Maxine, one of the biggest Shibui fans we know!

Rios + Nightshift!

Malabrigo Rios is back in stock! We received this colorful bundle today after a long delay and couldn’t be happier to see it.

Malabrigo Rios is a hand-dyed, worsted weight, superwash merino wool, and it’s one of the most popular yarns at our shop. Each 100 g skein has 210 yards and costs $15.40, and its versatility means we’ve seen it used for sweaters, hats, shawls, socks, capes, blankets, cowls, scarves, mittens, and more. Recently, Andrea Mowry’s “Nightshift” has been a popular use for Rios, so I thought I’d make up some “Nightshift” colorways!

I named these five combinations with the concept of “shifting” in mind, thinking of the way the colors change as they interact with one another, but also thinking more abstractly about change itself.

Koigu Collector’s Club: New Day.

The Koigu Collector’s Club continues! Each month, we’ll receive 21 skeins of KPPPM in a limited edition color dyed especially for a select group of local yarn stores that carry Koigu.

Our most recent shipment from Koigu is New Day, a rich variegated colorway. These special skeins are streaked with orange, rust, brown, and gray, with highlights of plum and hints of pale blue. Unpacking it, I was reminded once again of Kelbourne Woolens Perennial, a line of fingering weight solids that plays well with hand-dyed yarns like Koigu.

Tamy Gore’s “The Drifter” is a perfect way to showcase these yarns, a garter and slip-stitch shawl which calls for about 414 yards each in two colors. That means 3 skeins of Koigu KPPPM, at 175 yards each, and 1 skein of Kelbourne Woolens Perennial, at 497 yards each.

Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering was also designed as a playmate for multicolored yarns, and has its own unique color palette – here are a few that complement New Day!

Koigu Collector’s Club: Fantasie.

The Koigu Collector’s Club continues! Each month, we’ll receive 21 skeins of KPPPM in a limited edition color dyed especially for a select group of local yarn stores that carry Koigu.

Our most recent shipment from Koigu is Fantasie, a lively variegated colorway, streaked with ivory, bright yellow, orange, green, and pink. Unpacking it, I was reminded of the highlighter-bright shades of Kelbourne Woolens Perennial, and thought how well these two fingering weight yarns would play together.

As the folks at Kelbourne Woolens have written on their blog, Perennial was meant to team up with hand-dyed yarns, to complement speckles and variegates. One of the projects featured on that post is Cape Cod Knits’ “Shawl of Serenity,” which calls for 800 yards of fingering weight yarn – 400 yards of colorful hand-dyed yarn, and 400 yards of a complementary solid. That means 3 skeins of Koigu KPPPM, at 175 yards each, and 1 skein of Kelbourne Woolens Perennial, at 497 yards each.

Katie’s Kep.

We’re so excited about “Katie’s Kep,” Shetland Wool Week’s featured pattern for 2020!

This five-color fair isle hat is currently available as a free pattern download from the Shetland Wool Week website. A new Shetland Wool Week hat pattern is something I look forward to every year, so I downloaded it as soon as it was available, and then went straight to our Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift to play the color game. I spent some time putting together four color combinations, inspired by the four colorways shown in the pattern.

Shetland Spindrift is $6.80 per ball, and the project requires 6 balls – 2 in the main color, and 1 each in 4 contrast colors, for a total price of $40.80. We just got a fresh delivery of Shetland Spindrift with this project in mind, so all four colourways are currently in stock – get in touch if you’d like to order yarn for a “Katie’s Kep” of your own!
