17 years of HYS!

October 2023 marks the 17 year anniversary of the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, a milestone we’re proud to have reached! Anne’s goal has remained the same since she first opened the shop in 2006: to bring the best natural fiber yarns, tools, and publications to stitchers in the Triangle. By that measure, in my opinion, Anne has succeeded tremendously, and I am so proud to be on her team, spending my days in this special shop.

We like to celebrate with a sale – this Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21, everything in stock will be 15% off, with the exception of the already discounted yarns in our Sale Trunk. This is the time to treat yourself to some exciting new yarns, splurge on an inspiring book, and save on that special project you’ve been wanting to start this fall.

We’re also giving away our capacious HYS Tote Bags with purchases over $100!

We are still requiring masks in the shop, and no longer accept cash or checks – debit and credit cards only, please. You can read all our in-store shopping policies here. Thanks for your cooperation!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted items; there will be no exchanges or returns. Thanks!

Hello, Plystre Project Pouch.

Some months ago, Anne and I spotted a particularly appealing knitting bag on Instagram, where so many projects, yarns, and tools capture our imagination daily. I made a mental note. Soon after, a knitter came in carrying one of these bags, extolling its virtues and asking if we’d ever checked them out. The mental note became a post-it note, the kind that dot our desk at the shop, reminding us what needs to be done each day. The brand is Plystre, and we’re tickled to report that the Project Pouch is now on our shelves!

Plystre is a small company based in Oslo, Norway, that focuses on creating effortless, functional bags for knitters.

They make a variety of styles and sizes, but the Project Pouch caught our eye because it so well complements the other bags we carry. Though we have small zipper pouches for notions, Baby Baggu reusable totes for projects, and Baggu Canvas Zip Totes for carrying it all, we were missing a zippered project bag outfitted with pockets – the Plystre Project Pouch fills that gap, and beautifully.

They’re made from sturdy 100% cotton canvas, lined with the same, and close up securely with a zipper. The wrist strap is made of leather, sure to age beautifully and soften with use. One of the larger pockets has eyelets you can thread your yarn through to prevent tangling.

Though it looks compact, it’s big enough to accommodate a sweater – here’s mine with the body and sleeves of my “Kirigami”-in-progress, tucked in with some of my favorite notions.

Look for Plystre Project Pouches here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, along with other thoughtfully selected bags, notions, and materials!

New bags from Peeka Purl Designs.

We love sourcing products locally when we can, so we’re excited to announce a brand new kind of project bag made just down the road from our shop, in Chapel Hill, NC, by our own Marsha Krzyzewski!

Marsha has been teaching here at our shop for years, offering classes in beginning knitting, the basics of cables, lace, short rows, finishing, fixing mistakes, project-based classes on socks, sweaters, mittens, shawls, and scarves and so much more. With all of those knitting skills in her toolbox, she’s also made room for sewing, and these little totes bridge those two crafts: a sewn bag designed for yarn and knitting projects, under the name Peeka Purl Designs.

Shaped like a cube with an open top, these bags have a strap for easy carrying, and are lined with white fabric to make it easy to see what’s tucked inside.

They’re flexible enough to tuck into a larger bag but sturdy enough to stand up on their own, just the right size for a small project or a few balls of yarn.

Come by the shop to pick up a Peeka Purl bag for yourself or a friend!
