Lace Workshop: Anne Hanson’s “Sparrow Song”

Instructor: Nancy Cavender

Saturdays: March 8, 15, and 29, 2025; 3:30-5:00 pm

Hone your skills and learn about lace in this technique workshop, where we will use spare yarn to practice knitting lace, reading our knitting, and fixing some basic lace errors.

Anne Hanson’s "Sparrow Song" will be our case study, a beautiful introductory level lace pattern with instructions for both a cowl and a scarf. We will use "Sparrow Song" as a jumping off point for reading lace charts, knitting lace in the round, and knitting the same lace flat. During this workshop, students can choose to knit the "Sparrow Song" cowl or scarf, but also have the option of working in swatches to understand the knitting without taking on the whole project.

We will explore:

  • Using the written-out directions to understand how to read the lace chart
  • Using the charted directions to visualize the knitted fabric
  • Typical lace maneuvers, such as k2tog, ssk, yarn over, p2tog tbl, slipping stitches
  • The differences that come up when a circular pattern is knitted flat
  • Strategies for preventing mistakes
  • Recognizing missed maneuvers, such as yarn overs, and repairing them

Experience: Knitters should be comfortable casting on, knitting and purling, counting stitches, and fixing mistakes in stockinette and in garter stitch.

Materials needed:

  • Pattern: "Sparrow Song," by Anne Hanson
  • Yarn: smooth, light-colored scrap yarn in a solid color
  • Needles and notions: circular or straight needles in an appropriate size for your scrap yarn, cable needle, stitch markers
  • If you choose to knit the "Sparrow Song" cowl or scarf, you'll need fingering weight yarn and us 5 and 6 needles; check the pattern for details
