Intarsia & Fair Isle: “Scout Shawl”
Instructor: Nancy Cavender
Saturdays, September 9, 23, and October 21, 2023; 1:00-3:00pm.
Colorwork lovers who are ready for a new challenge, join us in knitting Florence Spurling's "Scout Shawl," using intarsia and fair isle techniques! "Scout Shawl" was inspired by vintage quilts, and features a variety of stitch patterns and color combinations for a patchwork effect. Choose either the original "Scout Shawl" or the "Scout Mini-Shawl," both of which are knit flat on circular needles with fingering weight yarn.
We will discuss the shawl construction and the layout of the charts, and ways to stay organized as we make our way through the pattern. We’ll practice joining colors, weaving in ends, and maintaining a consistent fabric.
Experience needed: Students should have completed several fair isle or stranded colorwork projects, and should be comfortable with following a colorwork chart - the pattern only provides charts, not written instructions
Materials:
- Florence Spurling's "Scout Shawl" or "Scout Mini-Shawl," available to purchase on Ravelry
- Fingering weight yarn in 5 colors; see patterns for yardage requirements. Designer Florence Spurling provides the following guidance for selecting your own colors:
- C2 – choose a light neutral (e.g. white, cream, beige, grey, etc.)
- C1 and C5 – choose a lighter and darker tone in the same colour family (e.g. lighter pink for C1, and darker pink for C5).
- C3 and C4 – choose a lighter and darker tone in the same colour family that contrasts with C1 and C5 (e.g. lighter green for C3, and darker green for C4).
- Use the schematic to further check how the colours will be paired together.
- US 4 circular needles (or size needed to obtain gauge), 24" or 32" length
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
